Sager NP8662 questions

It's been a while since I've had a Sager.. the last was the 3790C, I think. Now, with the day rapidly approaching to replace the laptop I have (not the 3790, lol)... I'm shopping around... Unfortunately, the "brand" manufacturers don't excite me (dell, hp, etc). While I'd prefer a 13 inch or 14 inch notebook, there just aren't any with video cards worth a darn :-/

I had a few questions regard this model, or a replacement which may be in the pipeline.

1. I'd *prefer* an LED screen... anyone know if the LCD screen will be swapped to an LED in the near future?

2. the nvidia 260m is a great card, no doubt. However, with the various resellers here and there, xoticpc, or pctorque, is it possible to do a custom 280m card in the unit? Or even upgrade it myself @ a later date... ?

3. 2 finger scrolling... coming from a Mac (it's not as rare as some think), I'm used to 2 finger scrolling on my trackpad.. the other multi touch gestures never caught my fancy.. but 2 finger scrolling is a nice feature to have... is this impossible with the Sager notebooks?

4. The entire processor lineup is totally confusing.. I'd like enough processing power, but not a CPU which sucks battery life like no other... A one hour battery is just not going to cut it.. 2 hours at least is great.. Once in a while you just need to be unplugged.

Sorry for the n00b questions... it's been a while since I've bought a PC

OK where to start? You want a 13 or 14 but GPU's not good enough. XPS Studio 13 has 9500m scores about 6000 3DMark06. 14's some Asus have HD4670. Got to be honest these are good.

The DeLL has LED oh and just for the record LED are LCD. What I think you mean is LED vs CCFL.

280m, just started hearing about them today. I suspect the Sager/Clevo's will be upgradeable. At first getting your hands on one will be an issue. After that cost will be very high.

Getting 2hrs should not be a problem regardless of what notebook. Talk of 280m and concern about CPU power seems at odds.

Do you want small or large notebook?

Hi there Thanks for the reply.. See my replies to you, in bold (it's easier on me to keep things organized.. call me vain :-P

Also, I Just read on another thread pertaining to the np8662 by PCTORQUE notating the discontinuation of the matte screen finish. In that thread they noted the np8662 may be terminated soon, due to the dawn of the np8690.. think this has merit? or could happen?

The new Star Wars the Force Unleashed Sith Edition (not the official title, but if you aren't familiar with the game, that "title" will render results via a search)... is a game I wish to play.. based on research it seems to be very demanding. While they do support 5 or 6 video cards, the 260m and 280m are on the high end of the list. So, I'd prefer a notebook with one of those two cards... you know, for the future.. <insert evil laugh here> By the way, I don't know enough about benchmarks yet to recognize a good, okay, or bad score from a number... need to start reading about that soon.

Do you want small or large notebook? I don't want an Alienware size notebook, or Qosmio size. They're huge (imo, just imo). The max I'd take is a 15.4 or 15.6.. no more than 2 inches thick.. is that somewhat normal for this range of notebook?

I recommend that notebook but it is not small or light. 15.4 7.11lbs 260m. Or NP8690 15.6" 280m 7.38lbs and i7.

The model above 8662 is also on my list of possibles, (np 8690).

What about a possible discontinuation for the np8662... and 2 finger scrolling?
I don't think I really know what two finger scrolling is. Discontinued? It will be I just don't know when. I guess it has at least several more months left.

Oh two finger scrolling is when you put two fingers on the trackpad, and use them to scroll up and down. Instead of/or in addition to the dedicated scroll bars at the side (and sometimes at the bottom of the trackpad).

Hi Enjoyingsilence,

Unfortunately, we have not heard of an exact time frame for LED screens as of yet, although we are certain it will be available sometime in the near future with a new model.

With regards to the graphics card on the 8662, it is only compatible with the nVidia GTX 260m. In order to experience 280m graphics with a 15" model, I recommend the new and highly popular Sager 8690. 2 Finger scrolling is also not available with the 8662, sorry .

If you want to save on battery life, we don't recommend purchasing this model with a CPU faster than 2.80ghz, and if you choose to go that high, I would go with the P9700, which is 25 watts as opposed to 35. In any event, while you're not gaming, your CPU usage (and consequently your power usage) will not be too high.

Let us know if you have any other questions or feel free to PM us for any individualized questions .

The 8662 will be around for longer than we thought . Also, the WUXGA matte screen on this model just came back into stock this weekend and is available for sale!

I just thought of something.. on the 8662 or the 8690, do the BIOS' support Virtualization ? for Windows XP Mode with Windows 7, and/or improved performance with vmware? Many notebooks don't let you enable this option, or the chipsets do not support it.

All the current models support Virtualization, including the 8662 and the 8690.
