hi.
i have an acer laptop, with windows 7 in it.
when i run a check disk for the hard disk, it schedules it to the next start up. Here's the problem:
when i start the laptop, it says "press a button in 10 sec to cancel". when the countdown goes to 1 it freeze. nothing happens after that.i waited for almost a half an hour but still nothing changed. so i did hard reset and after booting the laptop, it gave me the same screen again. i wanted to cancel it but didnt stop even though i pressed all the buttons. when it was 1 sec left it cancelled. whats the problem?

It has been reported that this happens now and then with W7 chkdsk utility. And it can happen on any notebook brands.

My take - W7 has a bug!

They are suggestions floating out there about registry manipulation so that W7 does not check for this process at start up and bla bla, but the work-around is either to boot up from an installation CD/DVD and perform the chkdsk and run the chkdsk at Command Prompt within the System Recovery Option, or a repair.

cheers ...

hmm i dont have the installation cd (didnt get with the laptop)
i like to check do those registry clean, check and other things once or twice a week. so since there's a bug and cant do it, is a check disk really needed? or any kinda error check i should run? i have ccleaner and registry mechanic. run them once or twice a week.

Nope ... So far the only feedback I got is simple the "bug". Hard drive in these feedback functions just fine.

I use cCleaner myself.

You shouldn't need to use Disk Check very often. It's only used to identify bad sectors in your hard drive and move important files to different locations if they were on one of the bad sectors. Since you already have CCleaner and Registry Mechanic, the only other disk maintenance you should need to do on a regular basis is defragment (unless you have an SSD). I also had a disk check-related error in Windows 7. On my computer, Windows 7 decided to automatically run disk check at startup on three occasions within a week. It annoyed me, and since it never found anything wrong, I just disabled it from happening at startup by typing in
Code:
chkntfs /x
into a command prompt (cmd.exe)

Not that I know of, but if you want to invent one, you'd have a pretty big market to sell to!

A manually running one

Manually deleting all the folders, the empty shortcuts and folders in Start Menu, then cCleaning (garbage and "dead" registry entries) it
