Moving this Software General.

Did you have any previous versions installed? If yes, try removing it completely before installing the current version.

Any services that are being turned off on your system, mainly the Protected Storage service? Last but not least, Vista up to date?

@ghn sorry for the wrong section

nope, I did not change the Updater (it is the one of Vista that does not require you to go to the website), and Vista is only to SP1... is it possible that after that an update has thrown me in this mess? since it gives me another error when I try to update (80070005 ACCESS DENIED).

The Protected Storage Device is something I did not even knew was on the system. how do I turn it off?
No big deal on the "wrong" section.. We hope/believe that you'd get better (more) inputs being in the Software General.

Protected Storage Service is in the Services area of Administration (System Management). This should be "ON".

I would try getting Vista to SP2 first, picking up the updates that come with it. Then try the SQL Express installation again, after cleanly removing it first.

then I have to solve the dreaded 80070005 ACCESS_DENIED problem, since it prevents me from getting the SP2...
That is not a good sign. You can try a suggestion found here on the net. But personally, not knowing your comp environment, I would say that it is time to restore the system to original state or go for a clean install.

If I use pcmon.exe under the settings to include any "Access denied" result, it shows 2 entries from "trustedinstaller.exe".

Can you follow the guide and reset them for the update re-try?

I'll try. I have to solve even more problems but who knows, maybe sfc/scannow will help me. as soon as I am back home I'll check.

Good lucks. We can (at least try to) get this licked, one way or another

try downloading the full SP2 package and instlaling it that way instead of through Windows Updates, that usually will work when the update version does not

Error that has to be fixed before the others: if I try to start BITS from "Services" it gives me Error 2: can't find specifed file.
Time to restore or start over with a clean install. Cut your loss, backup personal data and go for a clean slate.

can't I simply find the missing file?
Sure you can. I would not know where myself unless the system tells me where it expects to find these, then probably having to scrounge the net for the missing files or extract them (if one can) from the installation cd/dvd then ...

Personally, at this stage, you are missing some important files from Windows itself, it can only mean that the system is being damaged somehow.

I could use the program depends.exe maybe?

because when trying the "aggressive restore" it tells me that it can't run the program due to authorizations.

if I could know the corresponding registry entries, I could make myself authorized.
because I checked, I should have all the files...

This utility was last updated in 2006/2007 It might help in some parts but not all.

That's the trick, unless you have some good documentation in this area, everything you pick up in the net is only in pieces. You are responsible to put all these pieces together. You could have done the re-installation or restore from the recovery cd/dvd in no time

But I don't want to lose everything on the HDD because I don't know what to sacrifice in case of giga-format!

Can you back up all your personal data first?
