New Hard Drive - Trying to use recovery CD's

Hello,

I just installed a new hard drive in my Satellite 2435-S255. I'm trying to reinstall the system software using the Recovery and Applications/Drivers CD's, however it gets to the formatting step, goes anywhere from 1-4% complete, then just hangs and the hard drive stops spinning.

The new hard drive is the same model as originally came with the computer (IDE Travelstar 40GB). I've used the Hitachi Disk Performance Test and it has passed all tests. It is visible in BIOS. I'm even able to format from the command prompt, so I assume that the drive is good and is connected properly. It's just that when I try to use the recovery CD's that I never get very far.

Any suggestions?

Re-seat the ram modules (or take out one module if you have 2) and/or use another drive. Try again.

Double check and make sure that the drive is properly seated all the way in the drive bay.

Tried taking out both memory modules, then replaced only 1. Format went to 5% before quitting.

The drive seems to be fully inserted

Can you borrow another drive and give it one more try?

cheers ...
