HP 6820s can't find DVD drive

I installed Ashampoo Burning Studio 9 yesterday to burn some DVD's/CD's for archiving purposes on my HP6850s using Windows 7 Ultimate, and while I can burn CD's/DVD's on my Toshiba laptop, I can't burn them on this one as for some reason, Windows 7 Ultimate couldn't find the DVD drive when it was installed and I don't know what the exact details for it are so I can download drivers for it.

Is there any way I can get Windows 7 Ultimate to recognise the drive so I can burn my discs?

EDIT: I remember that the disc drive used to be available but at one stage, I attached a external drive to it which I removed properly and I don't know if that might have something to do with it...

Is this HP6850s the correct model? I don't seem to find it on HP site.

Ah, my bad! I meant the 6820s instead of the 6850s! *sweatdrop*

Cool. Fixed the thread title

Have you looked into may be a firmware update for the optical drive? You should have this model - HP Optiarc AD-7560A - correct?

I'm not too sure what the exact make is, but I'll download the firmware and give it a try because I've never seen a problem like this before...

Windows over time is known for blocking out DVD drive due to "incompatible" drivers. You can try first by setting high-low value before tackling the firmware. Scroll down at the Vista suggestion.

I found the UpperFilters entry but not the LowerFilters entry. What should I do next?

EDIT: I tried to install the firmware but it said that it couldn't find the drive!

Give this a try. Remove ALL CD/DVD burning softwares. Clean the registry using cCleaner. Restart the comp and see if W7 can pick it up.

I did as you suggested and the drive still hasn't appeared even after uninstalling the software concerned and deleting the relevant entries.

EDIT: I may have found the cause of the problem. I was trying to access iTunes and I got a message saying that the registry settings used by iTunes for the importing and burning of DVD's are missing and that I should reinstall iTunes. Why am I not surprised that such a piece of shit like iTunes could possibly cause this problem!

So it worked out ok now?

I've not had a chance to test it yet but i'll be doing so later today and hopefully it should sort out the problem with the disappearing drive letter.

It seems to have done the trick. Hopefully if I reinstall iTunes, it won't happen again...

Very nice. Maybe keeping an eye on the settings when you re-install it? Don't take the default installation

Oh, and a restore point "first"!
