a GM45 chipset can be run with ddr2 or ddr3 ?

hello, im looking for a computer for this very special season and i need your help.

The laptop i m looking at states that it use intel gm45 chipset. On the intel and the wiki page, they said it supports both ddr2 and ddr3 RAM. Is that even possible ? i think ddr2 and ddr3 memory have different physical shape and they wont fit onto others slot.

Also, what is a chipset, is that a motherboard? GM45 is a motherboard, no it is a chipset, no they are the same.
what?

can anyone please be so kind to help me out. Its xmas time, Merry Xmas to yall.

thx

Intel GM45 chipset will support DDR2 and DDR3, but not both at the same time. It is up to the board manufacturers to decide which module they want to be delivered. I think

cheers ...

Yep qhn got it. It is an OEM decision at point of design. After that you are restricted to the choice. I will throw in my 2 cents, on that chipset performance wise makes zero difference DDR2 800Mhz vs DDR3 1066Mhz. Bandwidth difference is less than 5%. I OC my RAM and crush DDR3.

DDR3 uses lower voltage but that is not of issue with most users. 5 minutes more battery life? Lower temps? Unless you bench, get a stop watch or pull out a thermometer they perform the same.
