HELP -- HP zd7005qv wont turn on!!

Hello all, I'm new here and in need of a little bit of help!

My HP zd7005qv laptop stopped turning on a little while back, and at first I thought it was a failed HDD. However, I also noticed that when I plug in the power cord, the lights would blink only for a brief moment then immediately go off. So I started fiddling with the cord and I got it in a position where the lights would complete their start-up blink, and when I tried to turn it on it actually started booting. But it stopped as soon as I moved the power cord again.

So I figured that the problem was a bad power jack.. it's pretty common from what I hear. I disassembled it, desoldered the power pin, and soldered a new one I bought off eBay. Now there is absolutely no problem with the power jack but the laptop still wont turn on. I'm afraid I may have screwed something else up while disassembling and reassembling the laptop.

When I press the power button, the lights at the top come on, I hear a light whining buzz and then all the lights shut off. I tried removing the RAM sticks, I even remove the HDD and the same thing happens no matter what. I tried turning it on with just the AC adapter, and I even let the battery charge a bit to try tuning it on with just the battery. I think I may have killed my processor..

What do you guys think?

I would first try to disassemble the notebook again and re-assemble it back paying attention to the thermal paste and the tightening down of the screws that hold the heatsink onto the CPU, not overdoing it.

About that thermal paste.. how important is that stuff? Cuz I didn't put any on there, but there also didn't appear to be any present when I removed the heat sink either. And I did kinda overtighten it, I can't loosen one of the screws again

Thanks for the help, keep them coming!

Thermal paste helps creating a good contact between the cpu and the heatsink for heat dissipation. You probably had a thermal tape type on original installation. Should replace it.

Over-tightening - uh oh, this could cause some damage to the cpu if there is no even pressure on 4 corners. You need to find a way to loosen that screw without breaking the holding socket. Good luck!

Well, one of the screws is not coming loose.. I didn't think I tightened it very hard but I guess it was just a bit too much and now the screw it pretty much stripped. They're all tightened down about equally though so I don't think there is any uneven pressure.

So how does one go about troubleshooting whether the CPU is dead or not?

Pretty much when the system does not start as you described above, one starts to look at a bad cpu or bad motherboard. The only way (for me anyway) is to remove and see if the system gave some sort of error, or replace it with another cpu and see if it starts.

cheers ...
