M17x vs M17 - Page 2

It's a hobby. Usually recoup money when selling systems. I've sold 4 laptops and multiple hard drives and processors this year. It's a never ending cycle. Just like with the 4850s. I'll sell the 3870s to get some of the money back.

I received the 4850s on Saturday but haven't had any luck with benchmarks. Almost seems like there is not enough power when OC'ing.

Need a bigger power brick?

cheers ...

I tried the one that came with the M17x but didn't help.

Interesting. You have no external devices connected when you OC, correct?

cheers ...

No, I've even tried stripping it down further as in 1 dimm, 1 hard drive and disabling devices I don't use that I cannot remove. It's a difficult puzzle to solve because it lacks consistency.

Ran some benchmarks with my T9900 and the QX9300 with my 4850s yesterday and the T9900 performed better with the new cards. I simply don't have enough "juice" to push the cards. Oh well I may just sell the system now.

4850s went belly up on me. AW sending me new cards. I think that was my hint not to push these cards in the M17.

think that is why they would not OC for you ???

The cards OC'ed just as easily as the 4870s did. It's just when running benchmarks whenever I got to the CPU test there was a major slow down.

Should probably put a warning on your posts then. Or did you reallllllllly push it hard?

No I definitely pushed the 4870s harder than the 4850s. Plus the problem didn't happen until after reinstalling the OS. It didn't happen while benchmarking so I have no real proof why it happened.

oh. weird.

NWGuru, awesome pictures!
I'm quite envious of your systems. I was wanting to buy a M17/9750 design before they redesigned system to the M17x. I have always been a fan of the classic skull cap design. I wish they still offered this system!
What do you think of the difference between chassis / overall appearance? likes / dislikes?

I like the old skull cap also but the current systems are better built but the trade off is it is heavier. I think anyone would be happy with either. They are not flimsy like the Asus systems.

Decent Review comparison. I wish alienware fixed the damn problems with the stuttering issues and that beast the 4850s with the QX9300!
