Newbie needs your opinion

Hello,

I am planning to buy a new gaming laptop to play the MMORPG Lotro. Now, I am not an expert when it comes to laptops and I would like to hear your opinion.

Recommended System Requierements:

Windows XP/Vista ( I own Vista right now, I hate it )
Processor: Intel Pentium 4.2.8 GHz
Memory: at least 1 GB
Optical drive: 2x DVD-ROM
Video card: min. 128 MBNvidia, Geforce FX6800, or AI Radeon X850 DirectX:9.0c

I also need a 7200rpm hard drive.
The game does not support Dual Core.

Some people have told me to buy a Toshiba Qosmia X505-0830, but I have heared many people complain about it. If you play a game it shuts down.

Others have mentioned Asus N71Vn-A1m Asus 6726X-RBBX05. Are they any good? Any other suggestions? My budget is between $1000- $1500.

Asus are good. Sager/Clevo's (better) are good. Why do you need a 7200 HDD? The Toshiba is not a gaming notebook it is multi media notebook. Have look at Xoticpc.com to get an idea of good high performance gaming systems? What is your budget? There is a wide range of offerings price/performance wise. Most dual cores out today will beat a P4 even on single threaded apps.

PCTorque.com and Gentechpc.com.

Any Core 2 Duo processor with a frequency of 2 Ghz or higher will be at least as powerful or more powerful than a 2.8 Ghz Pentium 4 in single-core applications.

I see your budget now sorta missed even though in first post. I am glad to see Djembe put a number on the Core 2 vs P4 single threaded. I was thinking the same number but with out re-researching did not want to go out on a limb.

I listed 3 vendors I think all are top notch. But what size do you want? 15.4/16 is popular and many out there. Even DeLL and HP might have some options even the new i7 well within your budget with good GPU?

I guess I am just saying have a look at some models and ask or just say more about your thoughts on what you need. So many good options finding the best for you is the task.

I looked up the first Asus you listed, and fine but think maybe you could do better. Even with Asus? Hav not looked the second you mentioned yet.

I need a 7200 hard disk because the game causes you some really bad lag otherwise. The problem is that the game does not support multiple cores.

@powerpack

They have some very nice looking notebooks. Will take me a while to look through it. To be honest, I do not have any special preferences, I am just looking for a notebook which supports Ultra High graphics without lagging.

I would say 15.6"-17" is ok. That one looked quite nice. ASUS G51VX-A1. Don't know much about graphic cards. Would that one be any good ? NVIDIA GTX 260M graphics...hmm it has dual hard drives hmmm.

I was also having a look at Alienware M17x, but I am not familar with Alienware so...

Sager NP8690 is pretty good since you can customize it. WOuld cost me arround $2000.00, but if it's worth it I will spend more money.

Ok, the search continues...

Ourea you are at the cusp! The NP8690 is at the forefront of 15/16" gaming performance. I must say far beyond your stated needs. But never the less a great choice.

What is your current system? That could tell me a lot about your bottleneck? I mean yea 7200 HDD can be better but consider if you are having issues what about areal density?

But the long and the short is if real time issues not the HDD's issues. Loading levels sure but lag? HDD if 1500 RPM will lag vs RAM. On the surface you have a RAM issue or weak GPU or CPU.

Say more and what do you have?

To run Lotro smoothly or any game, just take the Recommended System Requirements and 'Double' it up. So they say P4 2.8 get a dual core, doesnt matter if it doesnt support it, It will help in the Long run.
At least 1GB Ram get 2GB or more.
128mb GFX card? Get 512MB card of the latest model.

MMORPGs are not the most demanding games available so most laptops can handle it
