A305 - "water" random sound [solved]

Hi everyone,

I am dealing with very weird sound issue since I got my laptop one year ago. It's a A305-S6872. The issue: the computer just produces a sound that's sounds like "water droplets falling down into a glass of water". This happens randomly. I have been used Win Vista Home SP2 with the latest drives ans bios. Even when playing into the bios this weird sound come up to bore me. Right now the computer is running on Win 7 Pro 32 Bit. Again, this issue still here. I've tried different sound drives, all bios I found in Toshiba website. Nothing fix it. I think it is interesting, even when in sleep mode or into the bios, sometime I will listen the sound. It's like the computer is doing it by itself, crazy lol.
Also, I have called Toshiba support. Man I wish I had not done that. Completely useless and the guy just thought I was crazy and all. Since I've got no answer in the Toshiba forum (there one more person posted the same issue) I am giving a shoot here.
The computer is running pretty good. No complains, just what I wrote about.
Any suggestion would be more than appreciate.

Hard drive noises? Fan caught on something feather like? Can you record it into an audio clip?

cheers ...

No hard drive noises, or better no mechanical noises at all. To make sure I used WD diagnostics software. The hard drive is 100% fine. SMART is OK, also. No problem with the fan either.
I will try to record the sound using laptop's mic. I am not sure if will works, then I could try using my cam to get a video and with luck record the mysterious sound.
Is just like I have a leaky faucet inside the computer...man this can drive anyone crazy. I can't understand. I've checked all laptop hardware...everything looks pretty good to me. The computer is just doing (or making?) it. I have set up Win to no sounds. Even turning completely down the system volume, the freak sound still here, lol. So I can exclude any hardware problem (mechanical issues) and OS configuration. I dont know whether could be any driver issue. But everything is running smoothly. I just did not get it.

Thanks for your reply,

I was not saying that you have issues with either the drive or the fan. Just maybe some sort of "dirt" getting caught ... I would first just re-seat the drive and or the ram modules, anything that can be re-seated, just to be sure.

Another question, would this noise goes away when you plug in a headset?

cheers ...

I tend to think it may be your antivirus which might be making those noises. Try disabling the AV and for a bit. I know that might be harsh, but you can always go back after an hour or so and run a full virus scan. By the way, what AV do you use??? Actually, this complain goes back to at least 2003 with all kinds of different brand laptops.

qhn: Ok, I got it. So I did your suggestion and re-seat the drive and memory. No changes at all.

About the headset, this is a good point. I have no one, but I've borrowed one. No changes either. The sound still coming up sometimes.

So I recorded a video with this sound.
You can download here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/z1mcmiyzdho/MOV00723.MPG
I tested and is working fine.
You will listen the sound in 08 sec and 19 sec. At that moment external speaks were plugged.

That's also a good point. I am running Symantec Corporation version 10.2.3.3000. It's been installed since I've got the computer. The university has some distributed software for free. So I did what you suggested and shut down AV. No changes lol.

One thing that I forgot to say. The only way to get some peace of mind is listen something. I mean, justintv, youtube, mp3. Even media player with mute on, it works. That's pretty weird.
The video might help to figure out what's going on.

Anyway, thanks for the replies.

That is good work with the video (audio) clip

We can try this. Get a hold of a Live CD (download and create the disk - it is free) and boot it up with it and see if the noise is still present.

If it is, then it is hardware that we need to dig in further, if not, how about backing up personal data and perform a clean installation? No upgrade, nothing, just a complete reformat and new installation.

I got Fedora 12 and installed in a USB flash drive. Actually this is a pretty cool OS (nice GUI and plenty of options - all my hardware worked just as on Win) (thanks for the idea) and I may try to run it later on. So the point is that the "sound" still coming up. The computer produces the sound in any situation; under Windows, under Fedora, under Bios and under Dos. And is totally random. I performed a clean installation of Win 7 Pro. Then we can exclude any OS issue or software issue. It is a hardware issue, but not defective hardware (e.g. HD clicking and something like that). Somehow the computer is doing it. I could think bios issue. However I've tried 4 different bios and nothing fix it. In addition I checked the bios configuration looking for any unusual option. Nope, nothing that could explain the "sound". Actually I haven't installed all Toshiba software, only essential drives. This could be one possibility. I am pretty satisfied with this toshiba. However I do not have plans to get another toshiba in future. If we think about company software, toshiba has pretty much useless software rather than dell, for example. Anyway, I may double check whether any toshiba driver is missing. But I may say this makes no sense to me. I should be able (as I am doing) to run the laptop without the extra toshiba software. I have only three things installed: Toshiba disc creater (this is the only good stuff to backup OS drivers), extended tiles for win mobility center (useless) and windows driver package.

I wonder if you want to try to run the notebook with battery alone, and then with ac adapter alone and with another power outlet within the house. Just trying to eliminate some sort of interference here.

I almost had believed you had got it. Something like static energy or whatever could be the problem. But...I've run with battery alone and then just with ac adapter. The "sound" still giving its show in both situation. About the power outlet I used one in my department in the university, which is supposed to be a stable energy supply.
I must say I am running out of ideas.

I cant remember what I googled the other day with regards to the water sound, but got quite a few hits and some go back to 2003. So, its not a new problem, I wonder if our "Giga Diva" can shed any insight. Come on Michelle!!!!

My "last" grasp ... try with another power cord, the one that goes between the wall and the ac adapter.

Hey...I apologize for such long time to answer back.
So...I've got the issue fixed. Turns out it was the HD. A couple of weeks ago I just got a new HD (faster and larger!!!). I also got an external enclosure to use the original HD as an external device. It was so funny. All of sudden, after configure the HD as external device, I just listened "that sound". Sometimes when the HD was reading or writing something and then stopped, the sound came up. At least my life is much better now without that "sound" freaking me out. Nevertheless, I still not getting what happened, since the "sound" used to come up from the speakers.
Anyway, thanks for the efforts to help me out.
Cheers,

Maybe it was just because the onboard hdd location is near the speakers and the sound was coming thru the keyboard?????
