broken keyboard key, replaceable?

my "a" key on my keyboard is broken to the point where i can only make it work for about 20 clicks before it dies completely and i have to pop the key off and pull the rubber button up. it looks like the rubber button has broken on one side and it now collapses into itself.

i guess my main question is, does the ribber button under the plastic key attach to the whole keyboard? or am i able to replace JUST the little rubber piece under the key.

im not sure how much a new keyboard costs. but im guessing it would be a lot cheaper if i could just replace the little rubber piece.

has anyone ever dealt with this or have any insight?

thanks!

You can replace the keyboard easily. I upgraded mine to the 8890 keyboard since the Enter key is standard on the 8890 and a weird shape on the 8887. It cost about $80 from PCTorque. It can be replaced in about 1-2 mins. There is a post somewhere on this forum that has pictures of how to do it.

First of all, how old is your machine, is the warranty still in effect, or the extended warranty? If it is, have them cross ship you a new keyboard. As mikelmages noted, its a snap to install, if you have a clue (which I didn't, the first time). You need to undo the ribbon cable to the keyboard. Some are a plug, some are just a jam fitting. Be careful you don't muck it up. Also, when you replace the keyboard, its likely you'll need to reset your BIOS by taking out the CMOS battery for a minute or two.

I am not sure you can replace the little rubber bumper, never tried.

well i'll already had my machine completely apart. i know the keyboards easy to replace. but i no longer have a warranty or extended warranty and i can't even afford a trip to jack in the box so i definitely cant afford a new keyboard =\

i was wondering if the rubber pad under the key can be replaced by taking apart the keyboard.

i guess no one has ventured deep into the keyboard before =\ i guess i'll start saving.

i got the key to keep working. but it doesnt give the satisfying fluid press the others do. it just feels like your pushing on a stationary piece of plastic.

I guess you're also a student then? I accidentally ripped off my F1 key and whilst the rubber didn't appear to be damaged, I still get that same 'stationary plastic' kinda feel. What happened on mine was my fingernail got caught under it when I was annoyed and hit Esc harder than I should've. It snapped the little 'X legs' on the underside of the key. I've just learned to live with feeling tighter than all the rest. Don't think I could handle it if it were my A key though

yea. the key itself is fine. i dont think the legs are broken. but the round rubber tip which it pushes on its broken almost completely off so it falls into the bigger rubber part and the key has nother to depress.

its annoying to say the least. easpecially if you game with WASD. i find myself strafing left accidently because i cant feel the key pressing! =(

If you can replace the rubber by taking the keyboard apart swap it with another key that is very rarely used.

You'll have to contact Sony for that. If it were a Sager, all you have to do is call and tell them it broke and they send you a new one. I'd imagine Sony would have similar service - though you may have to pay for it.
