M1710 screen replacement

Hey guys,

My M1710 is 2.5 yrs old now but is still working fine for me. The only problem is is my LCD screen has some problem and i see a lot of dots on it especially when the background is dark like in a horror movie. But still it is usuable. I showed it to my local engineer and also contacted dell and they asked me to get a new warranty and they will replace the lcd. But I don't really want to spend that much and I have a spare LCD monitor which i am currently using with a VGA cable. I can do tasks as long as it doesn't require me to use the keyboard as the screen is almost closed.

My question is whether I can remove the laptop screen completely and use the external monitor as my main screen? I use my laptop as a desktop and don't need to move it anywhere. I can probably get a usb keyboard if it is not possible.

Thanks.

Yes you could just remove the display, but if your using a external monitor and USB keyboard you really would not have to remove the display.

Also if your using Wireless network then you need to leave the display attached as the Antenna's are located in the display cover.

Also you should be able to pick up replacement screens on Ebay for around $ 100 - $ 150.00 range.

I got a nice brand new replacement for my daughter's laptop (Gateway) from Bliss Computers. Good screen, nice and bright, and cheap. Shipped in 3 days. You might want to look there.

Thats what i don't want, to use another keyboard. I would like to use the laptop's keyboard. But i would like to know will it detect the external monitor as default during boot? or will it not boot at all? Right now during restart the windows boot screen shows up on the laptop and then the display changes to monitor.

Not so sure about the "default monitor" setting, but the notebook is smart enough to detect a working display source at boot up, providing of course that the display is only the bad part. You can also rely on the FN key toggle.

cheers ...

I believe you can set the default monitor from the control panel
