M4400 PCMCIA & Expresscard/54

Just ordered M4400 today. I was told that this notebook is having expansion slot that is compatible with both PCMCIA & expresscard/54, how true is it?
Most important is whether this is USB 2.0 emulated slot or true PCIe 1x slot?

Or, is this notebook having 2 slots, 1 PCMCIA and 1 expresscard/54?

Expresscard/54 seems not very common today compared to /34.

TQ.

Just read in http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=300199

that this notebook has 1 PCMCIA slot (right) and 1 expresscard/54 slot (left). It is not mentioned if the expresscard slot is USB emulated or PCIe 1x.

Express Card =

"The ExpressCard standard replaces the PC (also known as PCMCIA) card; both were developed by the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA). The host device supports both PCI Express and USB 2.0 connectivity through the ExpressCard slot; cards can be designed to use either mode. The cards are hot-pluggable." (Wiki)

cheers ...

Pretty sure on the M4400 the Expresscard socket is dual mode and not a USB only slot.

Yes, expresscard *slots* support both. The trick is finding an *expresscard* that isn't just USB and actually uses PCIe.

I see, thx for the clarification. As far as I know, USB 2.0 emulated expresscard runs at 60Mb/sec throughput. This is even worse than old PCMCIA 32bits with 132mb/sec throughput.

Only expresscard has true PCIe 1x comes with 250Mb/sec throughput. But it is really hard to know from the box or even on the card itself because this spec is always not printed.

yeah, Chris Lilley is right, it's not so much the socket on the system that you have to worry about. Its the device itself. Most all Expresscard Mobile broadband parts from cell providers just use USB. Heck, the minicard in my Latitude hooks up on the USB connection through that socket.
