Should I score a 1201n or is there something else to watch for?

Thread Starter
I currently have an Eee 1000HA or something like that, Atom with ~8.5 hours battery, 10" screen, XP, basically an awesome portable unit. I also have a Dell m6400 17" powerhouse monster that is nearly never used w/o being plugged in. I take the Eee to school and it's really nice to not have to plug in all the time for note taking.

The keyboard is small. Annoying, but not horrible. I can live with it, but with 12" netbooks all over the place, why deal with the hassle, I say. It is also very likely that I'll have 3 hours of downtime between classes next quarter, so something that can play low-end games to kill time would be cool. WoW w/ all settings on low is good enough for me.

So, it seems that the 1201n is basically perfect, I just don't want to drop $500 and then the week after find something else that would have been better, like a 14" laptop with a "real" dual-core proc and a 9600gs that gets 6 hours battery for $475 or something like that. It could happen, I just want to know if anyone has seen something in this category lately.

The 1201N has me intrigued as well, but I also have been looking at the UL30vt, which has switchable graphics, (From the integrated Intel 4500HD and dedicated G210m) nearly 11 hours of battery life, ULV Core 2Duo processor, and it's a 13.3" LED backlit LCD. The problem is that the UL30vt is a bit more expensive than the 1201N (Okay, a few hundred dollars more). Decisions, decisions...

I have the ASUS Eee PC 1201N-PU17-SL its a very capable netbook. No switchable graphics but thats just to reduce power usage. and its a complete different rig all together. You really cannot compare the two apples to apples.

It was worth the money. very good performance for what it is.

I was looking at the 14 inch model with an optical drive but alot of reviews said the keyboard was a bit flimsy and the overall build quality seemed a bit cheap.

If the 14 inch was a $100 cheaper and had a better build quality Id be all over it like flies on shi*

Plus Im worried about driver support for the switchable GPU's

As long as you are not jumping OS to OS you will be happy with this latest technology!

Well still, the next issue is the build quality. Alot of people have given the V2 version a bad rap in that dept

Is there anything similar to the 1201 that has an optical drive?

It is hard to impossible that you would find anything under 13.3" systems with built-in optical drive nowadays.

cheers ...
