Hello, I just purchased a Studio 1747 with a 17in screen that has a native resolution of 1920x1080.
It has an 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon 4650 card.
The problem is when I lower the resolution below 1920x1080 I get huge black bars on both sides of the screen. they take up two thirds of the screen.
I don't think it should be doing this. I have an older 17in laptop that has a 1920x1200 display that has 256mb of video memory that can run at different resolutions without losing any of the screen area. I realize onscreen images may get stretched or get skinny or degrade but there shouldn't be any black bars right?
I called Dell about it and had a horrible experience.
First call got disconnected, second call the tech left me hanging for over 10 minutes so I hung up and called back.
With the first 2 calls the techs didn't seem to understand what I was getting at. Their lack of English skills may have had something to do with that.
The third one told me this was normal and then transferred me to some premium support that was going to cost money so I said forget it.
I'm considering returning it.
Thanks,
