Thread Starter
just found this forum, cool stuff need advice...
yesterday upgraded cpu in ferrari one with 2.4GHz AMD Turion Dual Core TL66 processor, also upgraded Ram to 4gig. laptop is a bit random, but works ok, have tested a couple of games on it and it seems ok for now, although is running a bit hot.?
not sure if this is going to cause any problems?
have also flashed bios..any ideas as to what could go wrong?
ram and cpu from my dead ferrari 1100
The original cpu was a 1.2GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core
processor, acer tech guys said it was not upgradeble...

Any reasons for the BIOS flash?

cheers ...

will do

flashed the bios, because it was available on acer site, read a few reviews here and there, alot of people said the netbook hibernates when its in use and the new bios update would sort that out, also thought it may update the netbook to deal with the new CPU.

Interesting. Would be interesting when you run some benchmark as well. The AMD L310 CPU coupling with the ATI Radeon HD3200 is supposed to top any current netbooks performance at the moment.

pics :)

took pics with phone, not the best pics ever :/
the lid is a deep metalic red, most pics dont show this,
the buttons/keys are nice and big, they are actually bigger than the keys on the (standard) keyboard i am using to type this!
also attched system info screen, after upgrade.
hadrock, again not the best pics

Yes. You can get more information in our benchmark section.

OS update!

got windows 7 on this and it keeps crashing, comes up with kernel power error, seems alot of people having same problem.
After trying all ideas i could find, i was advised to put original processor back in , no way am i going backwards (if that makes any sense?), so i wiped the drive and installed vista, and it runs just like it should, nice and quick .
was worried that i would get driver issues but all drivers are accounted for...

Nice to hear your comp is back running smooth. Now I wonder if it was the BIOS flash that causes some issues with Windows 7.

I'll see if we can re-trace your steps to W7 without the BIOS flash once a system gets here in our office.

Incredible.
Do you know whether it would work with 2*4GB SO-DIMM?
I have got mine several days ago. So far I have upgraded to 128GB Kingston SSD and installed Gentoo Linux on it.
I bought it on Newegg. It came without Bluetooth module so I have ordered one on eBay.
BTW, on Linux CPU power saving (powernow-k8 module) does not work at all because it cannot acess ACPI BIOS, see my post here http://www.theacerguy.com/forum/topi...oblem-in-linux

stupid question coming up..
have you upgraded bios from acer site?

I used the ram from, my old ferrari 1100,
2 x DDR II SDRAM and 500gb western digital hhd also i had to put Original FOne processor back in this morning
I was told by acer tech that i could not upgrade the CPU, but did it anyway, so its up to you, me personnaly i would try the 2 x 4gb so-dimm, if it dont work just put the original ram back in...but thats me
I know i have voided the warrenty, but thats the risk you take....

The fan and heat sink in the FOne could not keep the CPU cool enough when playing Call Of Duty 4. The whole left side of the notebook would heat up, despite using the Belkin laptop cooler and after about 2 hours of game play the notebook would shut down
It then reboots and acts like nothing ever happened, well thats what the event viewer says

Now playing Call Of Duty 4 on lower resolution ..
i am currenty running Vista 32 bit that will not recognise more than 4gb, i dont know much about Linux ..
Although you would need 64bit OS to run more than 4gb (thats what i have been told).

where did you install the kingston drive, as external or internal?

No blue tooth on FOne is my only gripe with it, although there is a blutooth key on the keypad, i may just solder one to the board, as shown by TNKGRL, haveing an external bluetooth, just takes up the usb port permanently..
i have already copied all my movies and games to the laptop so i dont have to keep taking out the usb optical drive

hadrock

p.s if you do upgrade ram to what i believe would be 8gb, then do tell

Hi hadrock,

I have ordered this internal Bluetooth module, I hope it will work: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=230410706602
It is coming from Hong Kong so it is gonna take a while till it arrives.

I have installed the Kingston SSD internally, replaced the Toshiba drive that was inside. The laptop just flies with SSD.

TL-66 is Socket S1 according to Wikipedia. There are also newer, pin compatible sockets S1G2 and S1G3 with split voltage planes that take newer CPUs.
According to Wikipedia S1 CPUs should work in newer sockets but not vice versa. The question remains which generation Ferrari One socket is. I think since it is based on RS780M chipset it may be S1G2 or S1G3. In that case it should also take newer CPUs.
L310 is 13W CPU, most other AMD desktop CPUs are 30 to 35W. Therefore I doubt the cooling system in F1 will be able to cope with that much heat. If Powernow worked correctly with other CPUs beside L310 maybe it could be possible to downclock the CPU to keep it within reasonable power limit.
See the list of CPUs here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors

I will probably try 2*4GB SO-DIMMs from Fry's. They have good return policy so if it doesn't work out I will just return it.

It looks to me that ACPI tables are screwed up in Linux. Does PowerNow work for you in Windows? In Linux my CPU fan is always on. I am running latest 1.3109 BIOS from Acer website and my F1 shipped with it. I think part of your power problems may be that there is something screwy with ACPI in BIOS and even in Windows PowerNow doesnt work.

Does anyone have the older BIOS?

I dug a little more on Wikipedia and cpu-world.
It looks L310 is stepping G2 and according to cpu-world it does not have PowerNow http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD...310HAX5DM.html

The other G2 stepping CPUs are some from TK series, for instance TK-42 and it does have PowerNow http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD...K42HAX5DM.html

L510 is also stepping G2 and it has PowerNow http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K8/AMD...510HAX5DM.html

Weird.

Update,
Good news, I have installed one 4GB SO-DIMM from my other laptop (the other is under keyboard so too much hassle to remove it) and F1 works with 4GB+2GB = 6GB total so most likely it will also work with 2*4GB=8GB.
Update,
I tried with another SO-DIMM. Full 8GB seems to work, BIOS detects it and memtest is testing it now.

You would not have by any chances taken some pics of the memory adding steps?
