Freezing Booting problems...

I have an dell inspiron 9300. This is my business computer and it never leaves my desk. It has been plugged in for the past 4 years. Just today it seems like it is starting to fail. While on the computer the mouse would stop responding then jump around in delay then finally no response. I have to hold down the power button just to turn off. I turn on and sometimes windows will load then freeze while other times it will turn on then turn back off.

Could this be a battery problem? Is my hard disk failing? What steps can i do to find out whats wrong.

BTW... i'm on a different notebook :P

Tend to think it's a hard disk issue. Anything different if you are in safe Mode? Run a memtest? Run a chkdsk?

cheers ...

The issue could be due to many reasons such as virus or corrupted display drivers
You can perform System Recovery to resolve the issue.
Follow the steps in the below weblink for more information

2 things I think it could be:

1) Failing hard drive

or

2) The CPU/GPU are overheating ie the laptop needs a good internal clean...

Well the problem has escalated. When i try and boot the notebook, it starts then immediately shuts down. Takes me several tries before I can even get to the dell splash screen. Even then it would still freeze up and I would have to hold down the power button to turn it off.

I have already changed to a new HD and the problem still exist. I checked the memory with my original OEM that came with it and the same problem.

The only thing is either the processor or maybe my motherboard is shot.

What exactly happens when a processor goes bad?

Pretty much nothing. Lights on, fan on ... then quietness.

So you don't think it's the processor then? Will an overheating processor cause the shut downs when i turn on?

That could be a possibility. When these on/off issues happen, one can only try to pin point the cause by process elimination, at least for me.

Could be the thermal paste / thermal interface material is dried out and the heatsink is not making good contact with the cpu anymore. When it's stone cold and you start up it works for a bit. Then it heats up and can't dissapate the heat and thats when it hangs.

Taking apart a 9300 is a bit of a chore (I have a modd'd one in my stash too), but if you can, pull off the heat sink, clean and reapply some thermal goo on it.

Is there a guide to try and take it apart? I tried to take apart the 9300 and failed. I will try and put new thermal paste.

All laptop manufacturers do not use a thermal paste, but rather a dry thermal pad, between CPu, Chipset and GPU (if it has seperate).. It is not a good idea to scrape the pad off and replace with paste as the way the heatsink is set up, you don't get a contact like you do on a desktop CPU, plus of the heatsink is a pain to get to, I would not want to assemble and dissemble to replace thermal paste every few months...

Follow the instructions for dissembly and claen all out, esp round the fins and fan of the heatsink assembly...
