Acer Ferrari keeps switching off during upgrade

Hi

I'm trying to upgrade my OS from XP Home to XP Pro SP3. However during the installation process (about 70%)it just switches off and reboots back to the old OS.

Is there a special process that I'm not aware of?

thanks in advance

Simon

Are you performing this upgrade via Windows Update or SP3 installation in alone-mode?

mmmmmm....more problems.......after the above happened I got worried so I dug out my original Recovery disks and went through the recovery procedure. This seemed to go OK, I got the message at the end saying your hard disk has been successfully recovered but on reboot I get a black screen saying:

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM.
Invalid Partition Table_

crikey I thought this would be a simple process!!

Anybody any idea whats going on??...

Stand-alone mode: you download the SP3 package on your own, without going through Windows Update.

You can try this:

. Get into BIOS

. Disable Boot from Network (NIC, Network, PXE .... or something in that aspect)

. Try again.

Not sure how you disable that in Bios I can change the order but not sure how to disable.

This XP Boot CD (just trying 2nd Burn) goes through Windows setup gets all the way to the part where you choose a drive and partitions etc and then all of a sudden the laptop just switches off

Can you highlight the Network Boot entry and get to its properties? Sure that you can move them up and down, but it should be a value to have it within the boot sequence or not.

I got to the screen where it asks which drive,I chose a drive, then it asked ifit should convert the drive to NTSF, yes, then it said it had to do disk maintainance and reboot

when I rebooted it said:

NTLDR is missing
pres Ctr Alt Dlt to reboot

so did that and got back to the blue screen with windows setup

dodgey XP installation disk or faulty drive

I've just downloaded "The ultimate Boot Disk". I'll see whats on there see if I can zero format the drive.

See if I can get another copy of XP

I can highlight the Network Boot entry but can only move it up or down.

I've got the ultimate Boot CD working and running disk diagnostics now see if the drive is foo-barred

its the internal drive that came with the acer

thanks for the help by the way
