hp pavilion dv7-1261wm startup problem

i am experiencing a weird problem with this notebook. when i try to boot vista, which was on the hard drive i get a BSOD that flashes really quick so that i cannot see what it is. i ran a hard drive diagnostic and it says that the hard drive is bad, so i thought this was the problem. i ordered in a new hdd and i got the same problem. i tried to load windows 7 onto the harddrive thinking that something may have just gone bad with the install of vista. but i get the same BSOD. so i decided to try and go back and load xp onto the laptop and about halfway thru the install i get a BSOD giving me a stop error message. so i tried to swap out the ram with some working stuff but i get the same problem. so its not the hdd and not the ram. the thing that really has me puzzled is that if i try to install linux onto the computer it works just fine, no errors or anything. this is leading me to think that there is no hardware problem. i really am puzzled, any ideas would be great.

thanks,
travis

Are the Windows installation disk original or copies? Have you tried some other disks?

yes

i have an original copy of 7 x86 and x64 neither of those work, and the copy of xp was burnt so i dont think thats the problem, but im not sure, the laptop is only a few months old too

error msg

i turned off automatic restart so i could grab the error message and it is :

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

0x000000ED (0xFFFFFA8004A7D060, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000185, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

if that helps at all

I tempt to say it's a hard drive, but Linux was being installed with no issue. So, take a look here, the member had to "nuke" the drive with some utility and was able to re-install Windows with no issue.

Give it a shot first.

well i will try that as a last resort but i dont thnk it is the hard drive, i have tried a separate working hdd and its giving me the same error, its like something to do with the windows installation doesnt like some of the hardware somewhere, its really confusing, and i really would like to wait to blast the hdd because we are still looking for the receipt lol and i dont want to mess it up too bad so they wont take it back if need be.

ive thought of that as well, i know it is not the ram becuase i have swapped the bad laptops memory into the laptop i am using right now and it is working, but as for driver or hdd problems i dont think that is the issue either, i bought a brand new hdd becuase i thought that was the problem, but im getting the same error with the brand new hdd when i try to install xp, vista, or 7. but linux works just fine lol. damn windows.

Nice feedback and find. Yes BIOS and/or Motherboard virus infected do happen now and then, too rare I must say.

Indeed it is extremely difficult to get a BIOS virus let alone not knowing that it installed itself since BIOS flashing is by no means a stealthy activity. I wish we could have figured out conclusively what caused the OP's problems. My money was on the hdd controller.

yeah like i said i thnk it was a bios virus, it may not have been, but i believe there was an option on the ultimate boot cd to reset the cmos chip, and im pretty sure that is what i did to fix the problem, but im just happy i got it working lol
