Is it worth it to upgrade my e1705?

Hi guys, new to the forum . I have a e1705 that I received, refurbished, as a replacement of an older laptop over 2 years ago. T5600, 2 GB RAM, ATI x1400, 60gb HD, battery is dead (can't even see it in bios).

I been reading a lot about upgrades and I figured 4 GB and an fx3500 would be a great upgrade (not sure if the increase in performance with a 7xxx CPU would be substantial enough to warrant the price). Between fx2500/fx3500 and the RAM I would spend $350 and another $20 for a 150W power cord. Now here lies my dilemma. The laptop is already old, spending almost $400 to upgrade an old computer with a used video card is a tough decision. I was advised to save my money and get a new laptop down the line. A new rig would run me $2000 so there is a big price difference.

Do you think it's worth it to upgrade this dinosaur with a 7900gtx or 7950gtx (which would be satisfactory, and a great improvement over the x1400), or should I forget it as the computer will most likely turn into dust soon anyway?

I am not sure spending $ 400.00 on a old laptop is agreat ideal either.

You can get a great gaming laptop for around $ 1100.00 USD (gateway) with the GTX GPU in it - check out Best Buy.

Thanks for the input dave-p, I do appreciate your advice. I took a look at the gateway. I like the ASUS G Series G51Vx-X3A too.
Regardless, being a college student with a tight budget these options are out of my price range. While looking at cards on ebay I got an idea of selling the e1705 for parts. I saw x1400 going for a nice buck. I'm sure I can get something for the T5600 and the RAM. I kind of like my e1705 too much though, it served me well and I would hate to rip it apart for parts. The x1400 was always its only downside.

Anyone has a good deal on a FX2500?

Great community here guys. I was able to get a lot of information, fast. Keep it up!

I'd sell the E1705 on ebay and put the proceeds and the upgrade money into a new PC. You're already running on borrowed time with the E1705.

This is true. My m1710 is going to be worth at best a grand with all my upgrading by the end of this year. It only keeps going down.
