Remove battery when using AC power?

Thread Starter
Many sources said that removing your battery when using the AC power is a good thing to do for the battery, in terms of its life, etc...
Is this true?
I have a new notebook and I use it as a desktop replacement, so it will be on AC all the time.

Btw, I had my old notebook for almost 5 years now, and I've never plugged/used the battery even once ever since I bought it 5 years ago.

Personal preference mostly, for me anyway. I have my battery plugged in at all times and using it as an uninterrupted power supply just in case the electricity goes down

cheers ...

If you really never use batt then leaving at 50% charge and storing in the fridge will prolong it's life. Ability to hold a charge. But as qhn pointed out he does not do I do not either. I mean how practical is that? Not for most.

I tend to leave batteries on while in use, mainly as qhn stated.. I have had few issues on my new lappies with batteries... 2nd hand, not so good (well, you don't know how the previous owner treated it)..

I do the same. I use them as a back up battery.

Another irreplaceable benefit of leaving the battery in the whole time in a laptop is the ability to go totally tether-free during (thunder)storms. Disconnect the AC adapter and Ethernet cable and run using the batterie(s) and WLAN - you would be protected from any errant power surges caused indirectly by lightning strikes af any earthly magnitude.

I sometimes supplement that with another external auxilliary Li-Ion battery as well as a pair of back-to-back ethernet media converters, but most people probably won't go that far.

I always wanted to try that ethernet media converter, but since most of my electronics are hooked onto power surge strips (the $$$$ one) I figure that I might not need it.

cheers ...
