screen flicker with W7 x64 - nVidia Powermizer!

Hi everyone

I recently installed W7 Ultimate x64 and am dual booting alongside the original Vista Home Premium x32.

With W7 my laptop screen flickers intermittently in that i get horizontal white lines which can appear anywhere on the screen. It is most frequent when scrolling a browser page. This flickering does not however happen when using an external monitor. Nor does it happen with Vista.

I have tried various VGA drivers, all of which give the same problem.

Laptop Specs:

Acer Aspire 5920G
NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT
3GB RAM
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 @ 2.2.GHz

Thanks for any suggestions!

I would remove the current graphic driver (use driver sweeper to clean it good) and then let W7 try again picking up its own flavour and see.

thanks, i just did this and although W7 found a new driver, the flickering is still there. when using Driver Sweeper, there were 3 NVIDIA options to analyse and clean: Chipset, Display and PhysX. I only selected Display. Should i have cleaned the others as well?

Also, should i try uninstalling the driver for the 'Generic PnP Monitor'?

You have nothing to lose. Swipe everything that has to do with the current driver unless you want a complete new installation. Good luck.

Might want to give NBF own flavor here a try...

Hi again
I tried the NBF driver, but although the flickering seems to be less frequent, it still occurs AND the Desktop Performance for Windows Aero subscore has dropped to 2.9 (from 4.8), so no good.

Looks like i'll just have to try a clean install and, failing that, go back to Vista!

Anyway, cheers for your help!

Have you updated the touchpad driver?

hi guys, reinstalled last night, but no change. Everything's fine with the generic Windows VGA driver (except resolution of course), but as soon as i install the relevant NVIDIA driver, the screen starts to flicker again.

I have not updated the touchpad driver, but screen flickers even when i'm not using it. So even if the PC's completely idle it will still flicker occasionally. I've now reverted back to Vista as the flickering is too annoying to live with. What is most disappointing about going back to V 32-bit is that my Windows sub-scores increased considerably with the 64-bit version of W7. Maybe i should just try V 64 bit and wait with W7...

Any other thoughts very welcome!

Have you looked into this sticky and see if you can use something out of it?

thanks, but unfortunately the Aspire 5920 doesn't seem to be supported.

when i ran Driver Max it told me that quite a few drivers were out of date. I think i'll try to update them all and see...

That is ok. According to MichellG you still can use the upgrade DVD for all the drivers and BIOS (where it applies). You need more info, post it in the Acer thread there and she will get back to you.

problem fixed, i found the solution on youtube of all places! apparently there is a bug with the NVIDIA 8600M GT, whereby flickering will occur with all relatively new drivers, regardless of OS. This is caused by NVIDIA Powermizer changing the GPU clock speed. The workaround is to install Nv GPU Pro and disable Powermizer. This results in more power being used, but at least it stops the flickering.

Merry Christmas guys!

Glad to hear that you have it resolved, and thanks for the feedback.

Merry Christmas to you!

Hi, Just registered so I could thank aciduzzo for the thread he started on this subject and for posting the resolve as I have been battling with the exact same thing on my Rock Pegasus 670. Thanks very much! What a relief. Hopefully this will help some others in future and save changing drivers 1000s of times!!
Cheers,
Fred
