Anything else clean like the macbook pro?

Hi,

I am looking for a notebook and am having trouble deciding what to buy. Currently I am using a Q6600 PC with 4GB and XP at home, which will be replaced by the notebook. At work I use an Acer 7720-6152 notebook with a T5450, 3GB, 8600M GT and Vista which is satisfactory, but I wouldn't mind something a little quicker. I am becoming an independent engineering consultant; the most demanding use for the computer with be occasional 3D solid modelling. Most of the time it just needs to be lag free for office multitasking, internet etc.

I love the MBP series, for its clean design and excellent UI (multi touch trackpad etc). However, I will be running Windows 7 as I need to be able to use some windows only software. I have heard the main advantage of the Mac is the Apple OS, which leaves me wondering why I should pay a premium if I am going to use Windows anyway. I haven't seen a single PC notebook with as clean a design as the MBP.

I will be using the notebook at home with an external keyboard, mouse, monitor, and HDD. Therefore, I have little need for a large display, though the capability to drive a decent external monitor is a must. I need a battery over 3hr and I don't need much storage.

A friend has a G4 Powerbook which would be great except it can't run windows...

Any suggestions for me?

Thanks!

well it seems as though the mac is a great option for you.

that said, they are not cheap. the requirement seems to be the clean lines and design of the mac as the primary draw. sadly for those who use PC's there is not a real solution to give the same clean lines and sleek exterior as the mac offers.

if i was dead set on a pc i would take a look at the new HP ENVY series. but its still not as good IMHO in the looks department, and comes with a hefty price tag of its own.

Studio XPS 13? Can't you run Windows on a Mac with boot camp?

No special offer for ex-employees? You might ask if they do that to recycle their office inventory.

the advantage of an Apple is that it is fully wrapped up. Users have no chance to make it bad, either one likes it or one does not ... no tweaking about. If you question why pay for Apple if you only use Windows, then it might not fit your preference.

For CAD purposes you probably can settle with a 2Ghz/9600M combination system.

Sure it can with Virtual PC with NO performance lag, but no more than W2K I am afraid.

cheers ...

VirtualPC on a G4 PowerBook is an experience in tedium. Even with Windows 98 it's slow.

To the OP: you can boot into Windows on a Mac just for your CAD software and then use OS X for the rest of your computing needs. With Parallels or VMWare you can even access your Windows install inside of OS X when you need something from Windows but don't need full access to the hardware.

ultimately if you dont want to pay the tax for the envy of over 500 more than the macbook the best bet if you need style and performance is the macbook. the envy in the 13 inch screen size has it beat in terms of video card and in weight (rather shockingly) but it also feels cheaper and not as sturdy.

plus its a cool 500 dollars more
