New laptop suggestions? and classic car pics

First.. Happy Holidays to all the folks from years ago who might still be around! To you newcomers as well

Forum Question
I've been debating between replacing the LCD in my aging 9300 or simply purchasing a new Dell laptop. I use an XPS 710 desktop now as a main system however I still need a decent laptop for work as well as a 2nd gaming system... mostly WoW. Looking for suggestions on what you'd suggest as a current midranged gaming laptop 17" display and how reliable it would be to the amazing reliability of the 9300. I've heard some quality control issues of late with Dell.

Off topic..
For the longtime crowd here who remember me and knew about the car project here is a photo of the car. Its a 67 Mustang with a 68 Shelby setup rebuilt from the ground up to include todays newer performance. Highly modified 351w putting out about 430hp/450tq, 4-speed manual, coil-over suspension, power everything, 2000w sound system and so much more! Everything except the body itself is brand new including every nut, bolt, wire, etc. Just got it on the road in Sept and its already made a 1200 mile international road trip, won a number of awards & is a blast to drive.

Its a gift for my wife who absolutely love it! Daily Drivers Rock! Now.. I need one for myself

Hope you like it

Look at Asus. Nice car do you do 1/4 miles? What's it weigh? 3000lbs? If so I have it doing an 11.1 ET 119MPH 1/4 mile. That was hp at the wheels? How absolutely wrong am I?

Looking at 1500 or less for the laptop. I've really enjoyed the 9300 and its still a great reliable system. With the upgraded gpu, 2.4 pinmod & 2 x 300gb hard drives it has been great. Like I said.. I'm thinking about replacing it but might also just order a new replacement LCD.

Thanks.. The car is not light. There is about 300lbs of sound dampening material in the car and it is VERY quiet inside when the windows are up. Used Second Skin products through out and happy I did. The car will be a daily driver for her next spring back and forth to work. She wanted the big V8 sound outside but still be able to talk on the handsfree BT phone through the sound system. She can talk on the phone or with others in the car doing 75 down the highway at 3200rpm without raising her voice.

The additional weight from the sound dampening is mainly centered with some in the trunk as well. The battery and all the electronics have been relocated to the trunk as well as a full sheet of 5/8" plywood. False floor, suspended floor, custom enclosure for the 2 subs in the trunk also. All the polished aluminum up front to lighten the small block 351w and the new suspension weighing in almost 100 lbs less that stock should help.

I haven't weighed the car yet however its likely around 3400lbs. That said its much more balanced now front to rear and the additional weight makes it roll down the road comfortably and handles very well through corners.

Yes thats power at the rear wheels. Next year it'll hit the 1/4mile track for a few fun runs and I'll be happy with high 11s to low 12s.

One option is found at best Buy - They have a 17 inch gateway laptop which has the GTX280 GPU in it.

It goes on sale around $ 1100.00 or so.

Figured I'd get some suggestions for Dell laptops since this is a Dell forum. Any reason other manufacturers are being suggested instead?

Not really, we are here to suggest what is best for the value fitting the requirement and need, no matter which forum one is in. Unless one asks for "specific" brand

cheers ...

There is nothing in dells line up now that would touch the gateway for the price.

IMO Dell has abondoned the Gaming laptop market, and basically produce cheap lower end laptops or very expensive high end (aka Precision M6500 etc)

So you could look at Alienware (owned by Dell) but your price is going to be upwards of $ 2000.00 and higher.

in the Dell inspiron or studio lines they have now, there is really no high end GPU options.

OK thanks for the info. The 4.5 year old 9300 with all the mods still does everything work related that I need it to as well as full resolution gaming. Its been one of the most stable and reliable pieces of computer hardware I've owned over the last 20 years. This is the first issue I've had with it and I think for the time being I'll simply find a new WUXGA LCD for it.

If you want a DeLL the Studio 17. Well within budget. Or the Studio XPS 16 but the GPU while better on some newer graphics likely not on some older than what you have.

I think one reason at least some of us are not stuck on DeLL other than some reasons already mentioned is because we know DeLL does not make their own notebooks. They did not make your 9300. You could find out who made the 9300 and buy a model made buy that ODM? Of course the quality benefits do not remain so much with only one ODM it is more model specific and they all hit and miss the quality goal from model to model.

At the time the 9300 was made, it was at least designed by Dell. Now Dell outsources the design and manufacture of their portables. I am not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Too bad.. the 9300 was a solid performer and has been a very reliable system. From what I've been reading the newer systems haven't been.

I've always said outsourcing was bad. It sucks for the industry, economy, product and the end user.
