Hello everyone. My name is Chopp, aka Chopp25 on Xbox Live and im the noob i guess to this forum. Just got some questions and here to share what i have done to the dv6000.

Upgraded to 2GB memory RAM or Rom sticks
320 GB hard drive
Wireless G Wireless Card
Soon to be Windows 7

Some of my questions are:
What can i do to beef up the rest of the stuff in it that i have not already done and After its all said done with the upgrades will Windows 7 work good on it?

Its gonna be my temporary PC because im gonna redo my desk top again for the 2nd time in its life.

If someone could point me out in the right direction and chime in on some info it would be greatly appreciated because i have almost know knowledge of how or what makes a computer work. I do have some computer friends that help out but its kinda hard to get ahold of them. Hope to make some friends on here too.

You should def. upgrade your memory to at least 4GB of RAM. 2Gb is pretty low these days, esp if you're running Windows 7.

Ok. Where can i get that at because i only found the 1GB stick on the website that i found it on. Anything else that would help?

You should be able to pack in 4gb as Steve mentioned if you update your dv6000 BIOS to anything that is newer than the f.25

Visit HP to get the BIOS for your model.

cheers ...

To answer your question about the BIOS...you shouldn't need to update. My dv6646us uses ddr2-5300. You can find them at newegg.

I have to respectfully disagree with you. These are budget notebooks to begin with, so its not like anyone is going to try running crysis and photoshop at the same time here. In fact, I don't think I've ever used more than 1.8 gb or so of ram and that was with 10 programs running over 9 virtual screens. So really, unless you consistently see you're ram usage spiking up past 1.5 gb and you don't have 20 bloatware programs running in the tray; then you might consider 3 or 4 gb of ram a useful upgrade. Regarding Windows 7, compared to XP it uses about 200 mb of additionnal ram on startup which is arguably a good thing due to better caching.

Start rant: everyone after a year keeps saying double your ram to try and sound like they know what they're talking about (don't even get me started on the psu wattage front). Well it's not like applications are coming out with double the ram requirements every year. Sure, 5 years ago it was extremely useful paying $400 to get 1 gb of ram when 256 mb was the standard....and going to 2 gb of ram was still a good investment when 1 gb became the standard. But now I'll repeatedly see people claiming "4 gb of ram isn't enough...get 6 gb or 8 gb....12 gb to be really safe!". I just want to shout from the rooftops, you could have a million terrabytes of ram but unless you're a supercomputer its not going to make anything run any faster!
