... on any of the 4 USB ports of notebook.

What to do next? All devices work fine on another comp. All devices got power from all 4 USB ports.

. happening under XP and Vista,

. tried new installation etc ...

. tried setting USB legacy in BIOS with "enabled", "auto" and "disabled"

. tried disconnecting power from the wall,

. tried cold start (power and battery out, holding down power button)

. tried removing and reinstalling USB controller/Hub

. tried re-flashing/updating BIOS

....... inputs?

What computer (model). No yellow exclamations in Device Manager? All USB devices not working?

Happening on an old HP N5430 and the old Sager N4750. No USB device is being recognized. USB devices got powered though. Symptom is very much like an external USB device not having enough power feeding through.

Searched the net, and this issue seems to hit every brand every model now and then.

. Reset the CMOS did not help!

. The USB hub controller entry was correct within Windows device manager

. I took the motherboard out and soldering points are clean, not sure about checking the power since I am not good in this area.

. PCMCIA USB port cardbus works! I can use USB devices via this card expansion.

Something is blocking these USB ports ...

You said devices do get power? Just to please me have you used say a usb flash drive? I only suggest because they really need minimal power. I do expect you to say it does not work but want to confirm.

If driver issue you would get yellow triangle or some other warning in device manager you think? If hardware failure would you also not expect the same or even not showing up at all in device manager? So yea just like you I am lost. Can you disable USB 2.0 and see if that makes it work? Again a desperate stab.

I have been thinking about this since yesterday, but like you not coming up with anything.

Devices show up as Not-recognized within device manager, driver installed properly but ending up as not recognizable ...

Disable 2.0 did not make any differences.

Don't lose sleep over it I know there is a solution somewhere out there.

You need the drivers for the device. It shows not recognized so give the device a driver. I have not had to install a driver almost since XP but do it? It sees it is there just does not know what it is. Try with a device where a driver is easy to get. Install the driver then connect device. Trust me I know not that simple but with what you say? That is the next step. Why XP does not already have I do not know but it does not. Are these post XP release devices?

No go matey. Driver installed before or after makes no difference. I am inclining toward some sort of hardware fubar somewhere. Will take the board out tomorrow and make some measurements at work later.

Bump for a matey! I am dumbfounded? I feel like nincompoop (fake German) short for Dummkopf (also American).

I had this problem before, the device was not recognized in my laptop but it was recognized in my dad's. Both laptops running Win7 Home Premium.

The problem is... I don't remember if the problem got fixed after a reformat.

In my case only 1 device was not recognized, all other devices were working fine.

Cheers!

I would try a USB Hub with a external power supply.

It seems to me the USB power for the laptop is failing/failed

Did that with no change. I agree that the internal USB power supply is failing big time.

Update:

I was able to fix the problem by applying new soldering to the USB port contacts on the boards!

Cause was probably from plugging in some USB device(s) and waking up from sleep. This was from XP SP2 (my suspicion).

Everything now works!
