Compal FL90 Packed in?

Hi,

My FL90 packed up the other day, rather strangely. Originally bought from Rizeon around 2 years ago so its had quite a good run and alot of use.

Problem began when it failed to charge and shut down through the battery being empty. When i went to plug it in, it now wont boot up at all.
When i plug the adapter in the power light at the front flashes yet will not power on. when you try pressing the power button, it then changes from flashing to staying lit up.
I have tested the power supply on another laptop and it works a-ok.
Removal of the FL90 battery and plugging in the charger results in still no booting and the amber light no longer glows.

Any ideas on what might be wrong?

Thanks

You can try first leaving the battery and the adapter out, then hold down the power button for around 1 minute. Plug the adapter back in and give it a shot.

cheers ...

gave this a try, plugging in just the adapter nothing happened. I plugged the battery back in aswell, the amber light then flash's with when the power button is pressed down. after a few minutes of being plugged in it is now constantly flashing again.

You can try re-seating the ram modules and hard drive, and see if you can borrow another ac adapter somewhere else.

Leave the laptop plugged in, but not on overnight and see what happens...

tried reseating the ram and hdd but even when they are left out it just still flashes amber when attempting to turn it on. After a nights full charge, i can unplug the adapter and pressing the on button makes the amber power light flash.
Tried a different adapter, its definately charging..just not turning on.
I have read that the GFX are defective and tend to go wrong but unsure how to actually test if this is the problem.

Ok, I bet the DC socket has a bad contact, however things to try first...

1) remove the hard drive and see if it powers up
2) Remove the RAM and try the same (sometimes you get a load of beeps, sometimes the lappy stays dead)...
3) Clean the heatsink and fan assembly (get some canned air and blow it out)...

Also try an external monitor....

The DC socket, thats just a case of resoldering it then?

Tried all the above, no power going through at all. Just the amber light flashing at the front when the power button is pressed / adapter is plugged in. I tried to regularly clean out the heatsink/fans so it wasnt in that bad a state when i cleaned it this time.
thanks for the help

Probably replacing it... It is the sign of the centre pin coming adrift and not contacting...

i'll look into this, unsure why it the power light would still flash amber if it is not contacting? just a small charge getting through to enable that?

Could be, have found that DC jack issues throw up some wierd faults... Replacement or resoldering generally resolves it...

Hi folks, newbie here, turns out I'm having the exact same problem with my Sager NP2090, which is the same machine as the Compal. I'm wondering if I have a power adapter problem or socket problem myself. One question I have is this, if it turns out to be the DC jack, where would I locate one. I have no problems with soldering, I've done it quite a bit, I just don't know where I could get the socket from. Also, what power adapters can be used with this machine. I've found some online, but I was hoping maybe I could find one locally so I could run out and get one and try that.

Thanks for your help guys.

Hey, thanks for those links, unfortunately I don't see my computer in the power jacks there. The Sager np2090 is a Compal IFL90 which is not listed at that site, unless I'm missing something.

I live in Mooresville, N.C. which is just north of Charlotte.

Hi LtDan I cannot find the IFL90 listed also. I bet if you look on the DC jack and can pull some numbers the site might be able to help you.

Also call or PM the Justin's at Xotic.

Hmm, I need to pull it apart again to get the numbers. I discovered the other day that it's a pain to get to on this laptop. I can tell you that it came with the Lite on PA-1900-24 power adapter if that would help. If not, I'll pull it apart again in the morning and see if I can get some numbers off of it.

Call Xotic even if out of warranty you have lifetime phone support. Use their customer care they brag about. Make your life easy.

Sager, Compal, Clevo .... they are pretty (very) much the same machine with different names. Drop those peoples a mail or ring.

cheers ...

Sager is Compal and Clevo. Compal and Clevo are not the same. I checked the Compal on the link IFL90 is not listed. Compal 2nd largest maker of notebooks behind Quanta, Clevo is small but über systems.
