Does Dell not include a OS CD/DVD anymore?

My aunt received a Inspiron 17 notebook for Christmas and when the system booted up for the first time it asked her to create a set of restore disks. I told her to just cancel it out because Dell always includes it's own drivers cd and os cd with a new computer. Then we go looking through the box and there is no software!

WTF? Dell is now turning into HP and refuses to include what customers are alread paying for? How can one do a clean install of their system without a os disc?

Would appreciate anyone who has received one of these machines to tell me if they had the discs or not.

Thanks.

usually it's an option to inlcude the disks, make the recovery disks, they wrok well.

Or call Dell and request the disks they may send them for free.

Making recovery discs are useless for people who want to do a clean install, they only return the computer to it's factory state...burning recovery discs does not burn a OS disc.

Also, there is no option when building a system on Dell's site to include a OS disc, it's always just been given with every computer.

I would do as Dave suggested. Give Dell a call/mail and explain your need and requirement. They probably would accommodate you with a disk for a postage fee.

cheers ...

The recovery disk that it is prompting you to make are not restore disks. They are the OS and driver disks. Using the recovery disks that the disk creation process produces will allow you to do a clean install.

I've never supervised on the delivery of a new system, so I'm in the dark as to what gets burned when you're prompted. I know on Business systems Dell still sends out the Windows disc (and drivers on request of that option).

Not sure where you got the idea that "Dell always includes it's own drivers cd and os cd" because they don't and haven't for at least 6 years! I've purchased 5 Inspiron laptops and an XPS desktop from Dell over the last 6 years for myself, friends and family members. The XPS was the ONLY system I got an OS disk with. The Inspirons included the crap software bundles adn a couple of them had driver disks but none of them came with an OS disk.

Years ago when I was a regular poster here this was a common question people asked and we always told them the same thing.. Call Dell and ask for the Microsoft OS disk be shipped out to you.

after October 2006 they stopped their policy of not shipping discs with the new systems, and everything after that always shipped with discs (unless they happened to not make it in the box, which happened sometimes)
