every time i go to shut down my 8790 now it restarts. this started yesterday, and happens even if i log off windows or press the restart button. the only way to power it down now is to hold in the power button. any suggestions?

Go into Display properties in Control Panel to Power Options and make sure that option is checked that when you press the power button the computer shuts down.

This method ALWAYS works for me...Mr. Sledgehammer meet Mr. Computer.

I once had a virus that made it impossible to shut down a notebook except by holding the power button. Any chance that your machine is infected?

You may have picked up the new worm going around.
Unlike previous Internet worms, Sasser infects vulnerable PCs without any action by the user like opening attachments, allowing it to spread very quickly.

Home users would likely first notice an infection if their computer mysteriously rebooted or their Internet connection slowed dramatically.

Hmm.... I have a wireless router with two machines running of it. Mine (which is clean) and another desktop which most likely has the worm. If one machine had the worm, would it keep cutting off the internet from both machines?

I know that sounds dumb, but my internet at home is being stupid. I have to unplug the modem and when I plug it back in, it works fine for 5-10 mins then dies again.

a virus was my first idea, especially since i just started using the gnutella client bearshare. plus i dont have an antivirus yet (i know, i know) il probably go pick up nortons today after school. the only thing ive noticed though is that it shuts down no matter how i cut it off, havent noticed anything else malfunctioning yet.

Go download Avast anti-virus. It is free for home use and one of the best all around. Don't ever get on the web without an anti-virus again.

You might have the "Sasser" worm. The little bastard intercepts windows shutdown messages and sends the shutdown abort code. Really quite a slick idea -- script kiddies are getting more advanced all the time. This thing hit 3 machines at work today. I have 2 words for you: Windows Update. Set that to auto update to help keep your machine safe.

ALWAYS download the latest security patches from Microsoft. You can also check for free if you have the Sasser worm by going here.

Its a free PC check by Microsoft. Also, it would be best if you had a virus scan, like McAfee Virus Scan 8.0 (I swear by McAfee, it really DOES work). When you do get a virus scan, keep it up to date. Always have it automatically download and install the latest virus DAT or definition files. McAfee & Norton are good, but I like McAfee better, it takes less control of your system.

I swear by E-Trust a Computer Associates Product. Never had a conflict problem or an undetected virus. Things that I can't say about Norton or McAfee (over the years).

Get - - - A N Y TH I N G - - - just to protect yourself. I personally like Norton the least.
