E1705, freezing in games after about 20 seconds

I was playing a game of borderlands online and its started off running fine and then after about 20 seconds started lagging badly and then froze. I assumed it was some kind of network connection problem considering i was playing the game fine a few days earlier. Well i forgot about it for a few days. I just downloaded the battleswarm beta and was playing it and noticed it did the exact same thing, ran fine for about 20-30 seconds started lagging badly then just froze. I went back and tried borderlands in single player to confirm the problem and it also did the same thing.

Does anybody have and idea whats going on?

I have
E-1705 with 2 gigs ram and radeon 7900 GS.

Appreciate it

Do you have a restore point to the few days earlier where you had no issue?

I tried doing a system restore and it would always say "incomplete restore" on any of the dates I tried to use. Another thing that I recall was about a week ago i noticed that a louder than usual fan would come on (video card?) and my entire system would go very slow and the fan would not turn off or the system stop lagging until I just restarted my computer. Is there any other information I can give that might help?

At this stage I would give a full system restore (or a clean install) the shot. The whatever loud bang causing your system to slow down was not a good sign.

Restore to factory default or a clean install would help to determine if the issue is software related at the moment.

It wasn't a loud bang, it was a fan that would rev up louder than usual.

We settle for fan loudness.

How about taking the bottom cover and do some serious cleaning and vacuuming around the vents first, if you have not done so for the last 6 months or more?

Okay, i opened up the laptop and took out the fans, cleaned them, and also cleaned the bunnies that had accumulated around the gills that the fans blow into. I got everything back together and booted up a game. It ran fine longer than usual, maybe a minute or so, but then that loud fan on the video card kicked on like it used to in the past and the whole system immediately slowed to a crawl. I rebooted and the fan came on again after about 5 minutes (not running a game, just on desktop) and the system goes to a crawl again.

Try running it under Safe Mode and see how long it would last. I would still suggest that a clean install of the OS first before tackling the (possible) hardware issue.

Do you have any ideal of what the CPU and GPU temps are ?

This looks to be an issue with Heat IMO

yeah i think it is. it turned off twice while i was trying to run the dell diagnostics. ill download everest and let ya`ll know the temps. I already cleaned out the fans and grills. What else does that leave? broken fan?

I like HWMonitor for temps.

Right now my CPU is 44', and my GPU is 58'. I'm thinking i saw the GPU a lot higher yesterday, I'll keep checking it and see what it gets up to (PC hasn't been on long).

Oh and btw, i get a dell error code #M1004, after the system shutdowns. I read somewhere that this can be a BIOS bug. I updated my BIOS recently trying to solve the first problem, as i read somewhere that the Fan along with a cpu slowdown can be a problem that can be fixed with BIOS update.

Aight I ran borderlands and checked the temp. The GPU got up to 83c 181F, the cpu stayed at 44c 111f.
the GPU is getting high, but CPU looks fine.

If your not under warranty I may suggest removing the old thermal paste on the GPU and applying some new stuff. AS5 or what ever.

may as well to the CPU while it's open.

Also check the thermal pads when you removethe heat sinks

last on the GPU do the memory chips as well if they are using thermal paste.

I got the extended warranty and I'm still under it, does that change anything?
yeah I would call dell and most likley they will replace the GPU if they have any.

Tell them the GPU is hitting temps of 83C + then the system crashes.

You may want to run Dells Diagnostics as well and see if any errors are reported, as Dell may well ask you to do that anyways

Yeah I tried running the diagnostics a couple of times yesterday and my system kept shutting off. I'd get some error report when i turned it back on about it overheating.

Aight, I was hoping I wouldn't have to.... i hate dealing with the foreigners and the smug attitudes. I had to get the video card replaced about a year and a half ago. I knew exactly what was wrong with it and explained the exact problem and how I arrived there (through dell diagnostics) to each of the 7 representatives I talked to. Finally 4 hours later i started shouting and got the point across. The dell representative they sent to replace the video card was much easier to deal with and agreed that their customer service can be really annoying to talk to.
