Audio keeps locking up

i've had a recently strange problem where my audio will lock / loop if i close the program last playing the sound without stopping. for example, if i'm watching a youtube video and i close the browser, the audio will loop on the last sound until i play another sound to clear it. i've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers with no help. i've had the laptop for years with no problems, but this is a recent development.

thoughts?

How about uninstalling the audio device and let the OS re-installing it at next boot up?

Review background and start-up processes and see if anything is out of the norm? And a virus scan?

This sounds like an issue of the software not closing out properly(It should destroy all processes/memory used in this fashion) however I am not familiar enough with programming Windows' audio API to be able to say for certain.

Does this happen on all software for you or just certain ones?

yes, it happens every time any application plays audio
