Changing laptop : CULV and Asus UL30-A2

Hi !!

My former laptop was a Dell Inspiron E1505. I finally sold it because it was too bulky for carrying to school every days.

So now I'm looking for a new laptop with higher mobility and lower weight.

I've been looking for a netbook. These things are pretty cool, but the components inside them makes me scared a little bit. I have a desktop which is also a data server. I frequently need to compress/decompress large file to send it on my server. So my laptop would be a mobile terminal to access my personal server. Buying a netbook would make me feel like I was downgrading in performances instead of upgrading.

So I've turned myself toward the CULV laptops (you must keep in mind that battery life is the primary thing I'm looking for since I'm a student).

I've found the Lenovo U150. Small form factor, CULV, nice battery, but not available in Canada

Then, comes the Asus UL30-A2. 12 h battery life, very nice conception, 13.3" (I really don't want to go bigger than 13.3"). 3 pounds, which is acceptable and a HDMI port for my HDTV

I think I've found a good laptop for me.

I've found on the Internet in the last days that some units have a Wireless problem (Atheros chipset). If this problem occurs on my unit, I would change the Wireless card for an Intel mini-card, it would not be a problem.

So I'm asking you what do you think about this laptop ? I can get it for 844 $ CND with taxes shipped.

Thank you very much for your advice !

Can't go wrong with ASUS UL30A-A2. And that is a good price that you are being offered to.

cheers ...

I can get for $752 US shipped I don't think you can get for $844 Can? You can get the UL30-X4 for $799.99 plus shipping from NewEgg Canada, link. I don't know the difference between the two models.

UL30A

Well, actually, it's 765 $ CDN + taxes + shipping + insurance. The final price is 844 $CND

Shipping & Handling:$14.98
Shipping Insurance:$22.98
Subtotal:$803.86
No PST - Outside BC residents:$0.00
GST(5%):$40.19
YOUR TOTAL:$844.05 CAD

The X4 is an older version of the X5, which has a lower capacity battery, and that's not an option. The more I get, the best it is.

I am sorry I misread I thought you wanted for that not that you found it. I think it is a great buy and great for what it is. Netbooks are OK but I like this much better. It's size is small and light. Has a real dual core CPU. Incredible batt life.

Thumbs up!

The CULVs are good. Try to get something in 11.6" or 12.1" size.

Well I saw on wikipedia and other information sources that Intel is going to release its new Calpella platform tomorrow during the opening of the CES. They estimate this new platform being 10 to 40 % more powerful so I'll try to wait until the new CULV models come out from Asus with this platform.

That's what I'm going to do as well. I really wanted to get the UL30vt (switchable graphics-Intel 4500HD and nVidia g210m) but the new processors coming out will be better.
