Those specs are hot. Will definitely have to take a look when I replace my 17" Gateway. ATI Mobile 5870 should be a beast. I have the desktop version in my gaming rig and the performance is amazing.

Not sure about notebook / mobility performance levels but in the desktop versions 1x 5870 = approx 1x 295gtx or 2x280gtx from what I've heard. My last Nvidia was a 9800GX2 (= 2x9800).

Though the mobile versions of the 280 gtx are gimped and not really = to the desktop versions. I assume the 5870 mobility versions will likewise be gimped vs. 570 desktop due to packaging / heat.

Until they are actually in the wild and someone benches it, no one will really know for sure.

Oh, I hope Asus enables RAID functionality in the bios in this new one. It is the one negative in my G51J that I commented to Asus customer support about.

The mobile 280M GTX is based on the old G92 core (desktop 8800-9800 series), but the new ATI card is based on the new 5000 series desktop cards, so it should have a considerable performance advantage for that reason alone, and there should be a considerable energy efficiency benefit as well!

dual 260M, 280M or 4870 would still outperform the 5870 if whatever you are doing can take advantage of dual GPU. If you're talking DX11 that's something different.

The 5870 mobile does not match with the 5870 desktop version. Closer to the 5770...which of course isn't bad but the 5870 is the better card.

No mobile cards can match with the desktop versions, no matter what brand and model they are.

In the same breath, comparing a 222 mobile card to a 111 desktop card is just as crazy

OK NBC has gone nuts again. HD5850m memory listed at 2000Mhz HD5870m 1000Mhz both listed as 128bit bus? Or no correct?

Problem, Much is in conflict so some is wrong? It has to be 256bit memory bus even though ATI graph says 128bit, link? Marketing department. OK why? Everything says memory clocks 1000Mhz. But link of actual specs does not mention memory bus 128bit/256bit? Cool fine it does say 64GB/s memory bandwidth, link. Look at the bottom "Speeds and Feeds".

OK the math is simple and since this is so stupid or I am so stupid let me lay it out so all can see if them or me?

Start with RAM, it is all done the same so here it goes. 800Mhz? Memory bus is 64bit. 64bit to get bytes is /8=8. 800Mhzx8B=6400MB/s (6.4GB/s) which is why 800Mhz RAM is called PC-6400? Dual channel makes the bus 128bit which gives us 12800MB/s (12.8GB/s).

You got that last part? OK the ATI HD5870 the only way it can have 64GB/s memory bandwidth is? 1000Mhz is the memory core clock (same as CPU-Z and GPU-Z report). DDR makes it effectively run at 2000Mhz. So 128bit/8 to get bytes is 16? 2000Mhzx16B=32GB/s? The only way the 64GB/s works out is with 256bit memory bus. 256/8=32. 2000Mhzx32=64GB/s.

Also why would the 4870/3870/1800/800(128/256) be 256bit and 5870 be 128bit? Like I said marketing has their hands all over this! They screw up so much not just ATI but Intel and all the rest I see it time and time again.

But the truth is on FHD it is not that critical 128bit vs 256bit but hey I like the facts.

HD5800 Series can support up to 4Gbps (GDDR5) of memory rate whilst the max core clock is 700MHz, working with 128-bit memory bus.

Other than for the low-end HD5500series (64-bit memory bus), the 5600/5700/5800 works with 128-bit memory bus.

qhn what do I not get with my math in my last post? I pulled 64GB/s memory bandwidth off ATI's specs. 1000Mhz (ddr=2000Mhz) with a 256bit memory bus is 64GB/s 128bit is 32GB/s. I am doing these numbers the same way as I get system memory bandwidth? Am I wrong? bus/8=bytesXmemory speed=bandwidth?

I use this simple formula for memory bandwidth calculation:

- memory frequency x bus width = memory bandwidth

where memory frequency = bandwidth ÷ bus width

Try to plug your numbers into this equation and teach me to follow your chain of thoughts.
