i7 720M + ATI HD5730 or P8700 + GTX260M

I've been looking around for an all-around-laptop computer for entertainment, gaming, work, etc.

I seek your expert advice.

I've narrowed my choices to the following ASUS machines:

1) Core i7 720 QM, 1.6 GHz (2.8 GHz turbo) (#11 on Notebookcheck.net)
4 GB DDR3 1066 MHz
500 GB @ 7200 rpm SATA II HD
ATI HD5730 1GB GDDR3, DX11 (#35 on Notebookcheck but no details)
16" WXGA 1366x768 screen
6 cell battery

2) Core 2 Duo P8700, 2.53 GHz (#34 on Notebookcheck)
4 GB DDR2 1066 MHz
320 GB @ 7200 rpm
nVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M 1GB DDR3 (#20 on Notebookcheck)
15.6" 1920x1080
6 cell battery

Cost difference is about $50 between the two.

My family plays Dragon Age, Spore and I do some heavy spreadsheet work. I also plan to use the DVD player on long family car rides.

Thanks!

I personally would take the 15.6" and higher resolution. The graphic card is a toss-up at the moment, there are pro and con on both the ATI and the nVidia.

But is is also nice to have a Core-i7 on the comp

cheers ...

For me it's a toss up.

I think it comes down to:

1) resolution on dvd play (not sure if it will make a difference)

2) i7+new ati vs p8700+fast nvidia not sure which combo is faster

3) i also heard that the 260 runs hot and ppl are recommending coolers plus a change in the drivers so that it doesnt run so hot when not on high demand (ie during spreedsheet work)

4) the i7 case also looks better than the p8700 case (i dont like the fancy blue detailing on the lid)

Personally I like the 2nd, non-i7 one. Kudos for checking notebookcheck for the benchmarks, but it looks like the 260 will be about 25% faster benching than the 5730. The i7 one will probably get better battery life, but I suspect if you get an nvidia chipset you can do all sorts of manual voltage and FSB tweaks if you need to. And, x768 resolution is just a joke. I'm at x800 and wish I had more.
