Starfighter 3000 issues...

Okay, I'm having issues getting this to work. It's a windows 98 machine. When I first bought this game, I played it on a Win98 machine, but I know things may have been different. Anyway...

I put the disc in, explore, click the install file, and I go into the game setup. I get to select my soundcard and it sets up my video requirements...then the system crashes or I get a dialogue box pop up that says the program can't run in a windowed mode. I get the same issues if I go to the MSDos prompt through windows 98.

I would like try starting up in dos, but when I do that it won't let me select my CD rom. It only lets me select a floppy drive (A, which isn't even installed), and my hard drive. Says invalid drive when I try to go to the d prompt (cd drive).

Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

If I have to resort to DosBox then I will...but it seems redundant when Windows 98 is built on Dos. I'd rather start with figuring out how to get dos to recognize the CD drive when starting in dos.

Some good tips here. I don't know if they can be applied in your environment, but it is worth a shot. Scroll down and read through the page.

Thanks! This sounds like my issue and solution here:

I want to do the first thing...

Quote:
If you do a lot of DOS gaming or have other work that requires you to access the CD-ROM a great deal from DOS, you are better off loading the DOS CD-ROM driver automatically when you boot up the PC. (Bear in mind the warning above about compatibility.) Windows 95 will use its own version of MSCDEX; you should put the DOS command to load MSCDEX into the "DOSSTART.BAT" file in your Windows directory. Then, whenever you shut down Windows to DOS ("Restart in MS-DOS mode") MSCDEX will be automatically run and you will have access to your CD-ROM drive. The only disadvantage with this is possible slightly reduced performance from using the DOS-based CD-ROM driver. (I personally don't notice any degradation from this setup.) It also takes a bit more conventional memory.
How do I put the mscdex command in the dosstart file? Do I just open the mscdex file, copy the contents, then open the dosstart file and paste it all to the end of that?

no its a command

look at http://www.computerhope.com/ac.htm , it talks about how the line in dosstart.bat should look (in this case it is surving the same purpose as autoexec.bat), and the config.sys probably should already have a define for the CD-ROM, and what you put after /D: in dosstart.bat needs to match whats in config.sys
