Inspiron 9300 graphics card replacement

Hi guys, ive got an old inspiron 9300 with a 256mb nvidia GeForce 6800 Go, but i think the graphics card is gone, since I've suddenly started getting really bad artefacts, even while booting. Now i want to get the laptop working for as little as possible, so im thinking of getting a 128mb ati x300. I just wanted to find out from you guys if that would work, and would i have to flash the bios for ati first?

So if i boot in safemode, install the new bios for ati, uninstall the previous nvidia drivers, then open the laptop and fit the graphics card, and then install the ati driver, would that work? Thanks a lot. Sorry for being so long winded.
