Replacing GPU in M1730

So as detailed in previous post , I am down to 1 GPU on my M1730, in the interest of replacing it , from the forum sticky these seem to be the options

XPS M1730
Nvidia 8700M (both single and SLI****)
Nviida 8800M GTX SLI
Nvidia 9800M GT SLI
Nvidia 9800M GTX SLI

(I assumme this list is complete still . i.e. no 260's or 280's available)

Other than Dell or EBay are there any other sites , suppliers that people know of who might supply one of the above

DELL want 340 + Vat for a sli 8700m and there is every so often a 8800M for sale on ebay but they typically want approx 500 pounds for it (anyone had experience of buying one?)

I am dubious about the 8800 as evidence suggests it runs hot so would prefer a cheap 8700m or a warrentied 9800M

I personally would opt for the 9800 (re-badged 8800) with more "fixes".

But do go with whatever your pocket allows, honestly.

well if $$$ is the issue go for the 8700 Sli

and I agree with qhn, try to get the 9800 series cards.

you could most likley sell you old GPU(s) and recoup some of the costs.

you could also try baking the bad card and see if it will come back.

Holy$hit Baking works, Mine is up and running again, but I think I need to bake it one more time to do a solid job on it. It was just in there for a small amount of time.

OK great news , some questions,

  1. what card did you try it on?
  2. What did you do exactly (temps , how long)?
  3. and why do you think you will need to do it again?

The question is should I risk it on my 8700 , one GPU is still running and I am not sure how much benefit I get from 2 GPU's really on a 8700 gt. I think I will just wait until the last remaining GPU fails and try it then

Okay here is the Process that I did. (and yes I'm on my Baked laptop as we speak) First I did an easy bake where I left my oven cracked at 350 on my 8800 and it worked, however I had problems after gaming for about 2-3 rounds on MW2... So WE BAKE AGAIN!!! This time we'll go the full 380 for 8-9 mins in the oven, from start. Below are a few pics of the entire process. And I'll be off to game to check to see how well it works out. I have a 9800 being sent to me so I figuire why not try out the bake method in the mean time. It's quite shocking.

** MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THE PLASTIC END SO THAT IT DOES NOT MELT**

HEAT HER UP!!!

Installed again, and WORKING, Off to Testing now, AGAIN DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS IT IS YOUR LAST RESORT, but it does work.

Stable after 5 round of COD MW2 no probs, time to retire this laptop though and put it on the shelf. It still runs I just won't run it as my main anymore. but the process does work. I'll be moving to the 9800 next week. And then I'll sell this 8800 on Ebay. I mean it works, i don't know how long but it works I'll sell it with a buy it now at 300, that's fair isn't it? If you guys think this is wrong, let me know I'll make adjustments i don't know maybe I'll just keep 2 videocards for the m1730. Kinda pathetic but whatever...

Going to COH now to try that.

Ok it's fixed I'm pretty sure it's good to go.

Let's keep a tab on how long a baking job last. My last baking project has lasted over a year now. But minding everyone that I no longer push the limit on this particular comp.

Thanks for the update , @Darkloki I guess thats why ebay is a risk Trouble is you don't know what you are buying , I think you need to sit down and decide what words you will use .

I did see a ebay entry for an 8800M GPU for M1730 were the person selling kept stating that there was no returns possible and that the GPU card worked perfectly and once the buyer bought it the seller would assumme that the buyer had overclocked it if it failed , the problem was the reason for selling was because he was replacing it with a 9800M .... so who in their right mind would 'upgrade' from a 8800 to 9800 unless of course it was faulty.

I would say that be honest and you might be suprised how much people pay for it

On a different subject I have noticed that a number of 9800M's have appeared on EBAY , around £450 - £550 , they appear to be new but its very confusing as there appears to be a model of the 9800m's not too touch as they were withdrawn because of heat issues so again I guess it is a minefield , at the end of the day I might just shelve the beast and invest money elsewhere I am tempted by a Tosh qosmio x500-11m or one of the new ASUS gaming notebooks

I guess I could sell the M1730 as is but no idea how much one would be worth with only a single 8700m

Go with a 9800m GTX http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-XPS-M1730-N...item2a045ffffd

It's located in the UK. I don't think a m17x is worth it, now that I think about it. The current games don't require such a need to go so high-end. You should always pick your laptops/hardware out based on what software is out there. I just don't see the need on spending that kind of coin on high-end DX 10 stuff. I think I'm going to wait for the DX-11 stuff to come out before I splurge again on a new laptop. I'll be damned if I'm going to spend 2 grand for an EA title (Battlefield Bad Company) Yeah right.... I'll just start saving now and buy a new laptop this time next year or Christmas. I mean a bunch of new stuff is on the verge of coming out. USB 3.0. DX 11. I mean yeah Core i7 and DDr3 is awesome and even HDMI. But I think I'm going to Wait, but hey if you don't want your M1730 I'll buy it off of you and use my spare 8800m Oven Baked GPU along with my newly acquired 9800m and have 2 M1730's.

Dumb question. I heard that the 9800 dual is just a rebadged 8800 dual. Now, I presently have a dual 8800M GTX. IS the 9800 dual better? If so, by about how much?
It's not a whole lot better, it's just that it has better temps. If you had to pay 400-500-600 dollars for it, it's a waste But... if you get it for free from Dell as a replacement it's worth it for the lower temps and 10% increase. I dont' even know if it's really 10% I don't believe you'll even notice a difference between the 2 cards.

See the Differences are quite minimal, they are there, but again hardly worth the cost. If you got 600 to blow on a GFX card you're better off saving it for that next laptop, that's what I'm doin at least.

That's what I was trying to tell many peoples, that the good old 7600-256MB still performs solid comparing the new re-badged nVidia

Benchmark numbers sometimes do not mean much when in real life.
