Gateway ML3109

Hello together !

My name is Michael and I come from Germany, so please excused my bad English. I have read here that it is possible to upgrade the ML 3109 on 4 GB RAM and optional on Intel Core Duo or Core 2 Duo.

In moment my system with Vista HP, Celeron M 520 and 2 GB Ram runs fast and solidly.

First question:

What I must pay attention to, when I change the CPU (T7200 or T2700) and how I activate 3 or 3,5 GB RAM (with 32 bit system)?

Second question:

My Bios (Phoenix 83.09 ??) is restricted. How I come to all settings?

In Germany there is the notebook not very often, so that I get in germany no help or support, and from the gateway support I do not become really clever .

Many, many thanks for your help .

. I am not sure that you can take advantage of the whole 4gigo of ram on this model. And unless you are using a 64-bit environment, it will be just a waste with anything over 3gig. You don't need to activate anything, the OS will handle the ram number (or not).

. Maybe Michelle can answer you on the "restricted" BIOS settings. I personally doubt that you can do anything with this one.

Hello qhn,

many thanks for the answer. I have already tried to insert 2,5 GB RAM (1x 2GB and 1x 512 MB). However, Vista recognises only the 2 GB RAM. 512 MB RAM only also function.

About 2 years ago the users alambrose and Syrtus have written about upgrade for the ML 3109. Unfortunately, they are not probably active any more in the forum.

Try dig up the vast info in this section Michael. Hopefully you can pick up pieces on what you need.

Vista SP2 should recognize the correct 2.5gigo, not sure if it can utilize them all.

I'll look further into this a bit later.

Word of caution to OP. And it might be just my ignorance but.......This is ATI RC415MD chipset I believe. And unlike the Intel 945 chipsets I am not sure it supports the dynamic FSB feature the Intel does. Meaning the Intel can run at different FSB depending on the CPU. You are at 533Mhz if it does not support both CPU's you mention are 667Mhz FSB so could have a problem.

You need to research. Everything I know about Intel chipsets is useless since you do not have.

ml3109 can do 3.5gb ram

I still have my ML3109. I now have Win7 64-bit running and it is very nice. A long while ago, I put a T7200 in it... but the graphics are still the main bottleneck. I also installed 4gb RAM, but apparently the system is hardware-limited and only recognizes 3.5 gb ram. Not sure if this could be helped with a bios mod... I do not have that kind of expertise, and to be honest... the kind of time it takes to poke around looking for ways to circumvent the hardware limitations of an old laptop just aren't worth it. Its cheaper in terms of time and money to just sell the old, and get a new one. I also stuck a 4gb Class 10 SD card into the card reader, that I leave there permanently and use as a ready boost device, this helped the performance a bit. Additionally, I came across a utility called ATI Tool that allows me to manually increase the clock speed of the on-board graphics. My hard drive failed, and I upgraded to a 160gb WD... same 5400rpm, but still a better performer than the stock 80gb Hitachi. Overall, the few tweaks I've made have kept this laptop alive and it still performs pretty good even by today's standards. See ya...

One comment and one question

- comment on RAM issues -
if i have 1x2gb ram = computer sees 2gb
if i have 1x2gb ram + 1x1gb or 1x512mb = computer sees 2gb

if i have 2x2gb ram = computer sees 3.5gb
(identical ram chips)

- question on cpu -
I put a Core 2 Duo T5250 (1.5ghz, 2mb cache, 667fsb) and my computer did not POST although there was some power. I placed the Celeron 520 back, and the computer is fine.

Is it likely i have a bad C2D chip? Or maybe the 667 isnt compatible? The pin configuration is not exactly the same on the Celeron & C2D - 1 pin is swapped (i can show pics if needed)

I'm returning the T5250, but unsure if i should get a T5200 (fsb 533) or another T5250?

I know some people here put a 7200 in ... but that's still $100 vs the $38 i paid for the T5250 (and i don't need the higher clock speed).

Thanks for anybody who can point me in the right direction.

1) http://www.notebookforums.com/thread211066.html

Good explanation here and read Michelle's post above.

2) I would go with the T5200 since the pin would match better with socket.
