m15x 9800m gt overheating issues

Hi, i installed windows 7 a couple of weeks ago and since i have, my gpu fan speed seems to be stuck at a low level, even during games. This causes my gpu to go up to extreme temperatures, i believe it downclocks which is the drop in fps, then i have to switch off games. Thus i cannot game atm.

Example - Avatar the game, after about 5-10mins the gpu reaches 103 degrees Celsius.
Gpu temp when on desktop with no applications running normally 75-85C

I have tried both the x30 and x36 bios and they do not affect the fan speed.

Note that before installing windows 7, i was running vista and it was working just fine.

0 over clocking or fan speed utilities detect my fans. I desperately need a way to manually change the speed. thank you

a BIOS fix is being needed According to a few members here, the new BIOS can cause the notebook to become a door stop.

hello again, the bios that seemed to have sorted the problems was completely destroyed when i ran avatar maxed and reached 110C, ive tried the x36 and x30 both not working, do you know anything about progress being made by alienware? i cant believe this hasnt been sorted by now, its just another addition to my list of regrets from buying from them

Nope. It seems like that Alienware does have some hiccups with its m15x line for some reasons. Priorities I guess.

Have you tried applying new thermal paste? My m5500 was overheating like crazy and shutting down after an hour's worth of use. I applied some new thermal paste to the cpu and gpu (after baking the gpu that is ) and all is working well.

^^ That would not hurt either.

would i have to order some online? we have some basic computer stores like dell but there is very little around here - my 3 fan 5400rpm silent cooling pad should be here soon as well, not bad for £10 ^^

Yes you can order thermal paste online. I found a store here on Oahu that sold it but it took a lot of research.

cooling pad arrived today, takes slightly longer to but it still heats up crazy to bout 102/3 degrees, so ive lost about 5-10 at the extreme but i think im going to have to look into some thermal paste

Look for IC Diamond. It works better than the AS5 I used to use on my comps.

Nice. Follow the instruction carefully. A small application goes a long way. Take pics as well.

Try the recommendation above? Taking the comp apart and applying new thermal paste and see.

i actually just installed my video card.. maybe 2 days ago new paste and all.. but the problem was when i took the hard drive out then added it to a different alienware system, then put it back on the m15x just made the fans confused, cpu fan runs louder and more and gpu fan just never goes off or get full speed. even at 100+ temp..

Run an update (re-install) on all drivers again then.

all 70 updates from windows uninstall? or what do you mean? because i did try a different hard drive and installed windows again but before all the updates and with video drivers was still the same. (that hard drive i used was not formatted just from a dell)
im really stuck ive used x30 to get the cpu fan to reduce speed noise but the gpu fan remains the same at boot it seems like it would go full blast but it never does i know its working too..any other ideas? wish i can just get it to work as normal..

I meant devices drivers (chipset etc ...) - update or re-install them

alright thanks that solved the problem! so anyone looking to fix fan issue everything is here to learn

ok after several testing..i came to a conclusion that there is a bug on the fan.
if i move it around at times or press on the bottom case the fan will start up loud or shut off to less rpms vise versa...has ANYONE had this issue? or knows what is shorting it? it leads sometimes to a shutdown.
thanks
