Install Win 7 OVER Win Vista

Last July I purchased the Toshiba L505-S6946 (Win Vista Home Premium) which offered the FREE Upgrade to Windows 7. Received the Windows 7 Upgrade in the mail. So far the new laptop has seldom been used. It is however connected (wirelessly) to a Linksys Home Wireless Network (WRT54GS Router).

Anti-Virus is McAfee Security Center with ViruScan and McAfee Personal Firewall.

I would like to install Windows 7 OVER the existing OS (which runs just fine) so I can rollback to my previous OS should there be any problems. Would it be ok to just put in the Upgrade disc and run it?

First, let me correct a misconception: once you install it, you won't be able to use your previous OS unless you use the recovery partition of your hard drive to wipe your data and reset the computer to factory default.

Before you pop in the disc and go, I'd suggest running the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, available free from Microsoft. That will tell you of any programs or hardware on your current system that is not compatible with Windows 7 or will need to get new drivers or updates after upgrading.

After running the Upgrade Advisor, then if it doesn't show any serious compatibility problems you can then pop in the disc while Vista is running and it will install Windows 7 over Vista, keeping all your programs, files, settings, etc.

^^

Back up your personal stuff first also. But carefulness asides, if your system comes with Vista, 99.9% of the apps that come with it will run under Windows 7. It is the 3rd party app that one installs afterward that can cause issue.

Happy upgrade.

I ran the Win 7 Upgrade Advisor and there are no MAJOR issues. It does mention that the WiFi Stack MAY need to be re-installed. There were a few issues which the advisor indicates "May" cause some issues because it had no information regarding those apps.

All the applications on this computer came with the system. NO third party apps have been installed so far. Since the Upgrade disc is from Toshiba to be used on a Toshiba product, I thought they would take care of any issues regarding updating the WiFi for Windows 7 use.

P.S. Assuming things go smoothly during the upgrade, approximately how long should this take?

The wireless should be automatically reinstalled once W7 is on and running.

I recommend that you use direct cable connection for the net (not using wireless) during the whole upgrade since Windows 7 would go online and download and install the needed drivers by itself.

When everything goes smooth (and I don't expect otherwise), I'd say 1hr to 1 1/2 hr.

I'm using the direct cable connection to my Internet, and following instructions per the Toshiba Upgarde disc. I downloaded and I'm currently running the Toshiba Upgrade Advisor which seems to be taking care of all the drivers needed for Win 7. The process started at 10:25 AM (1/19/2010). Will post back upon completion of this "adventure". :-)

Upgrade took just under 2 hrs. Everything went fine. All I had to do was uninstall my Bluetooth Stack for Toshiba and re-install the one for Win 7. So far everything is working just fine.

Thanks for the encouragement and help.

This is not really an issue however, everytime I restart the computer, Toshiba Upgrade Assistant icon blinks in the taskbar looking for my attention. When I open it I see it is a User Account Control which has a slider for various settings. Anyone familiar with this application. I would like to NOT have it get my attention (by blinking in the task bar) each time I reboot.

You might want just to disable its start up process. I recommend using cCleaner for this task.

And congrats on the successful W7 upgrade

I have the latest version of CCleaner but I don't see Toshiba Upgrade Adviser listed under the start up section. I also checked under windows "services" it's not listed there either. It is however listed under the Add/Remove Programs.

I just read through the tool's description here.

I would say that you can safely remove it from the system, now that Windows 7 is being installing and running correctly.

So far it seems pretty good. I noticed late last evening that Toshiba DVD Player has a problem since the upgrade. I uninstalled it then downloaded the Win 7 version from Toshiba's website but the problem still remains. When I try to play a DVD using Toshiba DVD Player I get the message "Unable to output the video to an external device. Please check the external output setting after ending the application."

After researching various forums and the Internet in general, I see that this is a problem many have after the upgrade. For now I'm using Media Player as my default DVD player but I would still like to be able to use Toshiba's DVD player.

Try some codecs like K-Lite and see if the issue goes away.
