Lifebook A CPU problems

Computer starts normally and runs normal initially. Then, the CPU just shuts down to 0% performance. Computer stays on, screen is normal, cursor moves, but does not do anything.

At that point, it will not even shut off normally. Only way out is to manually shut off the power.

My initial thoughts are that the cooling fan, but it sounds like it's running. Would overheating shut down the CPU, yet leave the screen normal ,and allow movement of the cursor?

No if CPU shuts down I would think all would fail? Just for kicks run in safe mode does the same thing happen? Even in normal mode what are CPU temps? I am leaning away from hardware at this point that is why I am asking you to do and what temps are? It is very unusual behavior. Oh are you getting great HDD usage when this happens (hardware) that is the only thing even close I have ever experienced, but that is only temporary.

OK, just had it sitting while idling and the task manager % showed 7% when it stopped. Cursor would move, but not exit browser window, BUT, it did exit task manager. It would not reopen task manager or anything else. At this point, if you try to use the cursor multiple times, the computer will start emitting a loud tone, continuously, and then, the only way to stop it is to do a manual shutdown. BTW, still hear the fan running.

Time to perform a good clean up inside your comp, a chkdsk and a good defrag for start. Make sure that you have plenty of disk space as well.

I'm back !! OK, took laptop apart and cleaned out numerous dust bunnies. Actually, not real bad, but IMO, bad enough to possibly cause a heat problem. Defragged the drive, and initially, the computer seemed to run better. It stayed up and running for close to 2 hours before stopping again.
At this point, I can click the tabs on task manager, and they work, however, it literally shows 0% on all CPU functions.

Closed task manager, and that worked. Reopened by using cntl, alt, del, and it reopened. Was going to try a shutdown/restart, but it froze again, requiring a manual power off.

On immediate startup, it works fine again.

Help !!!

I would try next a CHKDSK, just to be sure that there is no bad sector lurking about. And reseat the memory, or take one out if you have 2 (swap them around also)

Ran the checkdisk and then pulled the memory, and reinstalled in the opposite seat.
Same problem. Task manager will sorta operate, but anything else does not. It's almost like it's running at 1/2% or less, but still showing zero.

You only have one stick of ram?

No, switched the two sticks to the opposite seat. Sorry for the confusion.

Leave one out, run with just one at a time.

OK, took out one, tried it and after a while, the laptop stopped. So, I took it out, installed the other RAM and it lasted longer, but did the same thing.

Now what?
At least we know that RAM is fine.

Can we try leaving out the battery and run the comp only on AC Adapter?

Battery out and the same thing....

Next?

Start it up and run it in safe mode. Let's see how long this one last.

Got is running in safe mode, and it is still running, very slowly at times, but running.
It appears that the CPU is running, but very slow. Very, very slow.

Can a CPU go into a slow mode?
Yes, it is being throttled down.

Time to perform a clean install, and if you can pop in a faster new hard drive. There is no need to waste time just playing around with drivers update.

Update, it's still running, but slowly...

On a new drive, new installation? or you are still under Safe Mode?

No, new drive, same setup, just letting it run to see if it stops, so far, not yet....

Don't have a new drive available yet.....Still can't figure out why the CPU would throttle down.....

You are running in Safe Mode. Many drivers are being deactivated. I would not worry about it. I am definitively sold on a new drive in your case.

cheers ...
