Stuck with a dead xps m1330? - Page 2

I would not recomemd using a hot gun or a hair dryer.
Most electronic boards are sensitive to electrostatic discharge and hot gun and hair dryer is powered from ac line,so air flow pass through high voltage elements and there are friction too who can electrize air.
In a ordinary hot air soldering station heating element is working at low voltage ~ 30 volts if I remember right and heating element and whole metalic head are well grounded to earth ground.

glad it worked.

m1330 is still working but I think its not a complete fix or a smart solution.

Plus a simple and no brainer solution is to add laptop legs to the m1330. I've got some home made ones 4 pieces of wood and rubber that give the laptop a gap of 3cm from the desk, the temps have gone even further down to 58c web surfing. Some would say I'm taking things to the extreme, but what us poor m1330 owners have gone through anything is possible.

Any charlatan things that can stretch the life (or must we say - reviving) of any notebooks are good in my book

cheers ...

Thats exactly what I'm doing trying to suck out as much life as I can.
I now run my M1330 only on 'Power saver' plan even when plugged into ac, this seems to keep the laptop running cooler perhaps due to the cpu lower clock. I've dare not play any games on it as it starts to play up.

have you cleaned out your fans ?

as in opened up the latop and remove all the dust bunnies ?

Yes its free from any dust as I mostly had the plastic cover over the gpu and cpu removed. As I understand the problem with the laptop is due to the weak die on the Nvidia gpu so I am trying to run it on a stable temp.

I think the laptop is still under warrenty but as I have the custom gpu heatsink mod its voided the warrenty, but from what I can gather the only way to fix the m1330 is to get the Intel Gpu instead of the Nvidia one

How would you see that the intel GPU would/can fix it?

cheers ...

You can always try to request Dell send you the replacement GPU and install it yourself.
