wmpnetwk and svchost hogging CPU

Hiya,

Sorry again for the post about the same problem, but I think I am finally getting somewhere.

I installed the process explorer and found that when I was having high cpu usage issues, that wmpnetwk and svchost were hogging it all.

I have managed to disable the wmpnetwk service, as I never use media player. But not sure how to tackle the svchost problem. I have only just disabled wmpnetwk, so maybe that will be enought to help with my problems.

Is there anything else I can do?

Inspiron 9400 (A10 Bios)
Windows 7
Nvidia Geforce Go 7900 (With the latest drivers from Nvidia)
Intel Mobile chipset
500mb HD (5400)
4mb of RAM

if not try Spybot for one

I don't believe it is spyware, as I have reinstalled the OS several times.

Would you expand what "hogging CPU" means? As long as the system performance is not being influenced, it should not matter how much CPU svchost uses.

Lots of apps use svchost, so you might want to review all start-up processes and disable what you don't need first and see.

you would be surprised, I have seen several issues even shortly after a clean install

Give spybot a try it's free, and I suggest installing the Intenet explorer plug in as well

I am hoping the problem more to do with media player media sharing.

The last time I had the problem, wmpnetwk was around 30-40 and svchost was around 15-25.

Thanks.

You meant 15-25% CPU in the CPU column? What about the CPU Usage % as a whole on your comp?

My System Idles Process racks up 98% of the CPU column, but my CPU Usage stays steady at below 20%

When the problem happens, the CPU usage is normally between 80-100% and will only go back down after a restart.

Thanks.

Tried cleaning out the start-up/background processes? Also tried another virus scanner app like Avast?

I am using avast

Since turning off wmpnetwk service, my laptop has been fine so far So, I am hoping that was the problem.

I have googled the "wmpnetwk" and found that other people have had similar issues. Which does suprise me, that something like media player could cause major issues like that.

Thanks for the help and hopfully you wont hear from me again about this problem

Just to let you all know that the problem resurfaced again, so I have finally given up and decided to go back to Vista.

The problem has really baffled me, as it is so inconsistent, as it can work fine for up to 4-5 days, then all of a sudden it goes again. It also does not seem to matter what is being used, as it has happened whilst using Explorer, Mozilla, Itunes, transferring data from my external hard drive and many others.

I am still convinced that the problem is driver related, so I will never buy a new OS, for a laptop that does not have the relevant software again.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Too bad. If you ever want to test out again, this time run the comp in Safe Mode, then see which process or driver that would ram the CPU up.

I have decided to give it one last chance, this time by turning Aero off, to see of that makes any difference. I have also changed the resolution, but I doubt that will do anything.

I would try it in Safe mode, by the problem happens so infrequently, it is hard to predict. Plus the problem mostly seems to happen when I am using a web browser.

Regards.
