Need help, my XPS won´t turn on

I have my Inspiron Gen 2 XPS since 2005 and I´m very pleased for all the good years.

But I think is dead now. I don´t know what happen but it was a bit overheat this last years, maybe I didn´t pay enough attention to its cleaning needs as I did the first year I bought it.

So yesterday I turn it off as usual, and now I tried starting it and it won´t even boot the Dell logo.

The fans turn ON and everything, even the screen iluminates, but doesn´t show any images and the Num Lock key is iluminated.

I don´t even get to the boot screen, it just won´t load up anything. My lappy is dying and its in a really critical moment.

Could anyone please help me with Gex(my laptop)?

try swapping your memory chips, and then try one at a time

when you say the screen turn on does it stay dark or its showing color, if it stays dark can you try plug it on a secondary screen and boot it while connected to the secondary screen

I tried with the old 256 memory sticks the lappy came with and nothing.

Tried connecting an external LCD and nothing, it receive the signal but stays dark. I can see that the screens light up, but no image is shown, no dell logo, no boot screen or anything, just a black font.

I also hear the fans starting when I turn it ON, and the Num lock key lights up too.

Weird thing happened with the 256 mem sticks. When I tried with the 2 gigs it stays on for a while but with the black screen and after a while it turns off. But with the 256, as soon as I turn it ON, it stop working in just a couple of secs.

Edit: I tried with all the memory sticks one by one and still the same, the screen turns ON but no Dell logo or anything. Fans ON too.

I don´t know how to explain how the screen lights up but stays dark. Its like its ON but it doesn´t show any image. But you can see it ON, like a light black instead of the black you see when its off.

here are my explenation the 256mb was shutting down faster due to the time the computer was taking to scan the memory 2gig would take +/- 8x so if yours is shutting down in 8sec with 256mb it will take around 1min with 2gig, as with the screen turning on i guess what you are saying is that when off the screen is a sort black with a reddish/brown tint and ounce switched on it becomes black with a deep blue tint and it does that in a sort of wave effect, does that sound similar.

ok you said you tried booting it with a secondary screen that you have plugged in before turning it on? do you have two port on the laptop dvi (big and white) and vga (small and blue) try both if you havent.

now with all this said i also agree it sounds like baking time.

I don´t have a DVI connector , I tried it with the VGA only with no success. The external monitor lights up but doesn´t show any image.

I did my research on this forum about this BAKING method you recommend me, and from what I´v seen in other threads, you want me to put my laptop in the oven ?

Isn´t that a little hazardous for the food I´m going to prepare when I´m done with my lappy?

I´m going to call tech support today to see if they can help me with something, what do you guys thinks is happening with my laptop?

And please tell me if there is a way to recover the DATA from the hdd?

I think the above are thinking GPU? As far as your data on HDD you should be in good shape on that as I don't think anyone is thinking HDD?

If by shutting off you means more than just the fans the actual system shuts down? Guys does that mean more than just the GPU? Or no?

if the whole system shut down you are right it could also mean something else but the fact that it seems to be scanning the memory and then shutting down makes me think that as soon as the gpu is ask for loading graphic for the windows boot it shuts down as it immediatly fail.

as for the baking in the oven if the gpu is onboard wich i think it is then no i would advise doing it with a heat gun, now for the chemical release part i would like to make it clear that yes there will be some but i must inssist a minute amount of chemical release in the oven and in my point of view no mre then when you clean your oven with easy-off and again in my point of view far less then what was release the first few time you turned on you brand new tv.

as for the data on you hdd you can get an external case for it for around 15$ and you will be able to plug it on another comp true a usb port .

Only the motherboard. You would need to really strip it from all plastic tape and cover.

By the time the oven cool down with its door open, you won't smell a thing.

cheers ...
