Apple Announces iPad (Finally)

Yes Apple's new tablet, the iPad, was the worst kept secret in the technology industry and today, we finally get to see it. It's a 10 inch (diagonal to diagonal) display and like the iPhone, you can hold it two ways; Portrait mode and landscape mode.

For more pictures, check out Gizmodo's gallery here.

Hold on let me check....yep still don't want one. I'd rather have a normal tablet pc with at least enough horse power to watch flash videos full screen, install whatever I want, take notes on, etc. This is like an overglorified shiny palm pilot with a huge screen.

I'd rather have this: http://www.motioncomputing.com/produ...let_pc_J34.asp . 3x more cost but 10x more useful.

I'm with ya. There's gonna be a ton of Apple fanboys who buy this on launch day though.

Wait a minute here, you mean "rich" fan gals/guys? The rest of them (us) have to wait until a)$ in hand or b)price coming down just a tad?

cheers ...

Prices aren't toooo bad. I don't know why anyone would buy one of these without 3G

The 3G version comes with 2 two data plans:

– 250MB data for $14.99 and
- unlimited data for $29.99 per month contract free on AT&T.

But better yet: every iPad comes unlocked so you can use pretty much any GSM SIM cards out there.

cheers ...

I'm sorry but I'm not going to buy something that has to be carried in my backpack and have no more capability than an iphone. But gee whiz golly darn you don't have to zoom in so much because it has a bigger screen

But Apple obviously realizes this which is why they're not charging full on Apple tax. But there comes a point where even if this thing cost 1/3 as much I wouldn't want it because it doesn't help me at all.

Assuming I didn't hate the Mac OS for it's oversimplification of stuff, what would have wowed me was a 10" screen, dual core Atom cpu, ion graphics, <2 pounds, slide out keyboard, 170 dpi color screen.

Hmm, $829, plus the $29.99/month unlimited data plan, + tax and surcharges, what about $875 initial cost for the 64 GB?

Something I'm wondering about- Would your iPhone/iPod-touch apps carry over to the new device, or would you have to subscribe with them all over again?

It is being noted that Apple introduced its iWork productivity suite with touchscreen capabilities. The package (Keynote, Pages, and Numbers - Apple's PowerPoint, Word, and Excel) can be downloaded from the App Store for $10 (for each utility I think).

cheers ...

I am not hearing anything about this initial cost.

As with any licences, it is machine specific. Not sure about the ability to carry them over to other machines when the current one is still working.

Yes, it was just a thought that 'popped' into my head. Would be interesting to find out though...

Oh and the reason I posted taxes and surcharges is that all cell carriers have 'taxes and surcharges' that are not outwardly mentioned.

This is a dumb question, but do any of apple's touch this that products support using a stylus instead of your fingers?

Apple decided to go with an iPad Keyboard Dock ($70 at this writing) instead of the stylus. This practically converts the iPad from a tablet to a net-book.

cheers ...

Numbers don't add up do they?

I don't know about this; I hear that a lot of the so-called 'tech experts' are adopting a "wait and see" approach to this device. There might be some add-ons later that improve it, but we'll see.

2 more comments-

Did you see AAPL's stock plummet today...down from 5% to 3%?

Most tech writers I see are either all fanboys or got a double shot of Apple kool-aid with titles like "Why the iPad will be a success" "Things to love about the iPad" "iPad - Potential for enterprise use."
