Dell offered me a replacement ... bring me up to speed.

Hey guys,

For those of you who want to read read, if not:

tl;dr -- new replacement on the way, will be contacted by Dell, whats the skinny nowadays vs. what I have?

So, Dell offered me a replacement after some awful issues with my 1710. They said it would take 3-4 weeks, but after talking I was told within a week I would get an idea of what they had to send me.

As I am really out of the loop, what would hold up with what I have now. TBH I think the Alienware stuff looks horrid and I don't game much anymore on here. I told the rep I would accept a Studio 16, but he didn't seem to understand I would downgrade then kept talking about the Alienwares. I assume once I get an order I can go from there.

A few questions. Whats really out there anymore compared to what I have. I don't need anything crazy, but I would like to know how these new cards I see (mainly ATI after looking at the Studio 16) hold up.

What about audio outputs? HDMI outputs?

Also, I upgraded RAM a while ago, will they still see I have 1GB or my new 2GB? I would hate to have spent money on the ram now its useless.

Thanks for the read! Sorry for the wall of text.

I'm going to assume this is a serious post and give a serious answer.

If they offer you an Alienware, take the Alienware. It is worth 3x as much as the Studio.

If you don't like the Alienware, sell it, then use the leftovers to buy a new laptop and pocket the change.

You're really ripping yourself off by trying to get them to downgrade you.

Different point of view here --

I Started out with a M1710. It was the best, overall, "gaming" laptop I've had. However, after about a year and a half of solid use, it started to fail all over. Dell "upgraded" me to an M1730, which was about 5 POUNDS heavier than the M1710 with a power brick that weighed more than a netbook. It was a bit quicker, true. And for another year and a half, the M1730 worked fine.

Then the M1730 failed, too. Dell replaced the motherboard and LCD, but could not replace the 8800 SLI video cards due t perma-backorder. After TWO MONTHS of continual delays, lies from Dell and problems, I finally received a replacement -- and M17x. Again, a bit faster than the M1730, but sweet hell this thing is heavy and bulky with SHARP METAL EDGES on the corners of the LCD (great for a home with kids... )

After all of that, Dell then turned the problem to ME and said they would offer "no further compensation because I have received several upgrades from the original laptop." Well, I've got news for you, Dell -- the M17x is a side-grade from a M1710, at best. In 3 years you've made a faster laptop, sure, but not an upgraded one. This M17x is already showing signs of failure (how about the vid cards shutting down when the fans kick on, letting me HEAR what's happening in the game, but not SEE or CONTROL what's happening, until I reboot!)

If I had it do do over again, I'd go for a Studio, just for the size / weight / bulk factor... this M17x is crap and I'm sure that it won't last the 3 years I have left on my warranty, so I'll be in for more Dell runaround nonsense in the future.

So, for the OP... while the Studio may technically be a downgrade, depending on your use, it can be more of a sidegrade than an M17x would be (because neither one is an upgrade, imo).

This is a serious post... I am just not into gaming as much and don't need to have Dell upgrade me everytime something goes wrong. I just wanted to see what was out there and also note that I would PREFER the 16. Smaller, cooler, and still a heck of a lot better than what I have now (aside from the GPU).

Take the M17x and sell if it you really want a Studio.

I agree with dave, take the M17x and sell it. You can even buy a different brand at that point if you wish.

If I wanted a Toyota and someone offered me a Ferrari for the same price...seriously? I don't think you are going to get any bad karma for re-selling it and taking the proceeds and buying something nice for you or the fam!
