Travelmate 5602 screen problems

Thread Starter
I uninstalled 2 programs and deleted shared files after the uninstall.
On reeboot of the computer my screen was pixellated and it was hard to read text.
I have tried the following to get the screen back to normal.
System restore
reload uninstalled programs
Installed video drivers
Contacted Acer who told me to put system back to factory defaults, which I did
Nothing has worked so far
I have set my screen size to 1024 * 768 which allows me to read text but the screen still doesn't look right.
I have plugged in an external monitor which there is no problem with.

Any help would be appreciated

What applications did you uninstall? Have you played a video clip to see if the video itself is messed up?

At this point with out enough info I am considering the removal of apps and the display are coincidences but too soon to be sure. I suspect screen issue or screen component ie plug/wire or other. External display being correct really leads away from software?

What GPU and have you played with it's control panel settings?

I would recommend a clean re-install (yes, I read that you had put the system back to default) first, just to be sure.

Thanks,

The 2 programs were Ulead video studio and a car maintenance manual which I can't find just now.
Video is the same as pictures, not really bad but looks like I am running low definition, ie trying to blow a picture up too far.
I agree that it doesn't look like software but the laptop never moves from it's desk so nothing moves.

I did do a clean install.

When I start the computer the definition on the Acer logo is bad even before windows has started.

It is running Nvidia and I have tried changing all the settings.

Don't like the sound of this then. LCD is probably failing. External monitor works, so we are safe to say that the GPU is still in good shape.

You did try with the original driver from the Acer Site?

Yes, I installed the drivers from the Acer site and the Nvidia site, just hate coincedencies.

Yep, too bad that one just can't easily swap out the screen for testing.

After a lot if input I can now describe the problem better as the computer looks like it is running in safe mode.

You are saying that under Safe Mode you have no issue? I see on Acer Site an Intel driver (6.14.10.4363) and an nVidia one (83.6) for XP.

You did try theses, correct?

No, I have not tried safe mode, just noted that the screen looks like it is running in safe mode i.e. low quality.
Yes I updated the drivers from the Acer site and also from the Nvidia site with no change,

Try re-installing the chip-set driver or re-flashing the BIOS. I am gasping for air before staying with the notion that another LCD is being needed.

Interesting to read again that software could cause the issue as in your OP.

Been away for 2 week so was hoping for a miracle when I got home, no chance.

I downloaded the bios and chipset programs from Acer, the chipset didn't install properly so I checked it and it was only up to XP and I run Vista, cant find any Vista utilities.
Pretty much the same with the bios a DOS window opens up but a file opening error occurs.

How did you put the laptop back to default?? Did you do the Alt F10, Recovery DVD or by using ERecovery
post #14 of 28

I backed up my system and then used e recovery, looked the same as when I had used the alt F10 a couple of years ago.

I'm just wondering if somehow the proper vid driver wasnt read in the backed up install.
Just wondering if the Alt-F10 might furnish the proper driver

I have updated the vid drivers from acer and nvdia before and after the reset but no change, if I use another monitor the picture is good, so I am looking for a monitor driver if such a thing exists, I am using the computer just now and the graphics just look low quality although the colours are all good, it is quite hard to describe

Is it possible that you can take some pics of the 2 displays? We can try to have some feel on them.

No problem, I will do it in the morning, I took a screenshot and sent it to my work computer and it looked normal so I will charge up my camera and see if I can get a good picturein daylight.

Hopefully there are two files attached to this they look worse than the image on my screen but it gives an idea. the funny thing is I dropped to a lower screen size as I couldn't read text at the higher size, but I put the screen size back up for the pictures and I can now read text.

I would try at this stage using an external monitor for testing and hope it is just the LCD that is going bad.
