XPS M1710 Video card options...

I was going to repair my Inspiron 8600 but now I have a chance to get my hands on an XPS M1710 with what is believed to be the same fried video card everyone is experiencing with it...what would my options be for repairing this computer if it is simply the video card needing to be replaced?

I can find the stock replacements through Dell and eBay, but I'm curious if there are other alternatives out there?

I'm also curious if the hard drive from my Inspiron 8600 would be compatible? I doubt it, but doesn't hurt to ask lol

Thanks in advance!

If you look here under M1710 the second group of cards are recommended. I'm somewhat embarrassed how sloppy that thread still is but it is what it is.

Thanks for that info! Can you tell me what the ones with "mod" or "heatsink mod" written next to them mean?

This one should be compatible, then, correct?

Okay I got the M1710...it has no hard drive, no power adapter (but a good battery), and will need at least a video card. Unfortunately, I'm on a tight budget...I might be able to get the charger for free, but they're only $25 used if I have to buy one. My biggest needs will be a hard drive and a video card...my needs for either are minimal. 80gb has been more than enough for me for years, and the only thing I play that's graphically intensive is WoW...and right now I play that on a 2.6ghz compaq with a 128mb GeForce MX 4000, though I would like a slightly smoother game.

Suggestions?

Looks like you have pretty much everything under control, just need to find some good offers on the peripheries. Good luck.

My biggest curiosity is with the hard drive...I've got a good list of compatible vid cards and can handle that. But when I look on eBay there's mentions of caddies and some just a hard drive...do I need a "caddy"?

This machine, if there's no hard drive in it at all, should boot to the bios, correct?

Correct.

Thanks again!

Without a video card, could I still get a signal for an external monitor? I just want to check to make sure the system is working before I start really dropping money into it.

so other than a few flashing lights and some beeps not much to see lol

Not that I am aware of. There will be no correct signals for the external to recognize.

Okay I didn't know if it had one integrated into the mobo like some machines.

I doubt that the XPS m1710 ever has an integrated GPU.

I'm still curious about the hard drive thing, though.

I seem to recall the drives on the M1710 (Sata Drvies) just slid into the side of the laptop.

Goto dells website, and check the service manual

They are located in the Support area, - click on the Manuals tab.

yeah it's a SATA drive and it does slide right into the side of the base...I would think you just slide the drive in but eBay has a bunch of people selling "caddies" and I don't know what they are.

Woot...500gb drive for $50 on Dell...glad it's not going to be prohibitively expensive.

Link? That is a good price.

Actually I just saw that the "caddies" are for putting a hard disk where the CD drive usually goes.

I think I messed up my search somehow because when I searched again the drives I'm finding are 2~3 times that lol
