Well Gateway belongs to Acer, so there is a possibility of crossing "engine". And there is always the possibility to use one manufacturer's BIOS on another, when the condition is right (motherboard, chipset )

Question back to you - do you have to update your BIOS?

cheers ...

well i read some successful stories with older model of the lt20 series, using the acer ado250 bios firmware.
but not the 2028 model.

Telling you the truth I don't know the reason behind Acer giving Gateway LT series so many model numbers since they have very much the same specs.

The only difference I observe is the color. I don't know. Bottom line it is still an Aspire Net-Book. AOD250 sounds as good as the base for these net-books to me.

You can try using AOD250 Bios (it does show a bunch of versions on the site) and hope it works. Or, my preference here, leave it alone unless you have a specific issue that needs a BIOS update. In this case, mail Acer and ask Support to get you the correct version.

ok i did the unthinkable and opened the laptop
here ist he info i got

KAV60 LA-5141P
KAV60NBX0000JV00
KB926QF D3

RTM 875N-97
98J29S1-G9341

ALC-272X

i wasnt sure which chip is the clock speed, until i ran into the RTM 875N -97, which is similar to one in setfsb, but not the exact one, so now we need to generate the dll file for it, so we can overclock it.
btw, lets take a look at the interesting fact, it says KAV60 ON IT
so it should accept the bios from the KAV60 from acer, even thought their tool says KAV80. not sure if i can or should force i to accept the kav60 bios firmware

feel free to comment

So my guess about the AOD250 BIOS was not too far off You can try the update if you want, back up your old one first.

But since it is not being confirmed 100%, I would leave the BIOS alone.

Well said qhn "if it is not broken, don't fix it". Messing with the BIOS is one of the fastest ways I know of, TO MAKE A WORKING COMPUTER, STOP WORKING!!!!!

Oc

Yes it's not broken.... The motive is to try and get more juice out of it.
The current bios locks te shared memory to 8mb
I want to increasee it to the max at 256.

Also persuing the ability to overclocking the CPU from 1.6ghz to higher using setfsb. now that I know the clock name, I need to make the dll for
it.

Can you link us to some information as how the BIOS upgrade allowing this expansion?

well my plan is first is to get an utility to dump the current bios on the laptop, and find a good way to edit the settings in it to change the shared video memory and make it higher.
yes i understand the risks and how i can pretty much kill my laptop, but then again, i like to learn new things.
if anyone know of a good bios dump program and a "decoder" to read and safely modify , please let me know , thank you

I have owned several Acer computers but all I had to do to increase the shared memory was to install more RAM. I do not remember the exact amount of RAM that came with the 5100 (I think it was 1GB). At that time I had only about 8MB of shared memory for the GPU.
By installing 4GB of RAM (2 X 2GB sticks of Kingston duel channel RAM) my normal BIOS allowed me to move up to 256MB of shared RAM. You may want to try this first.
Also overclocking a laptop with an integrated GPU is very risky. They are not set up to dissipate that much heat.

I'm very interested if you update BIOS

I have a Gateway LT2044u, which is just a version of the Acer AOD250. My current BIOS shows as v1.10 dates 9/4/09 from Insyde.

I'm very interested in knowing if you, or anyone, has updated to the new Acer AOD250 Bios KAV60 v1.26, that correct the speed to 1.66 MHz?

If it works on the Acer, shouldn't it work on the Gateway clone?

Anyone?

just a thought. typically if the bios shows 8MB shared memory, that is the base memory and it is actually using DVMT

http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/cs-010488.htm

if that is the case, which i suspect it is; than you would not be able to force 256MB shared.

em250 video bios?

Ok so you guys know a lot. I have a similar question. The current video bios on the emachines em250 has screen rotation disabled. The emachines em250 is a close of the acer d250. Anyone know if any of the acer machines allow screen rotation? Tempted to try a bios upgrade. Suggestions/ideas?

Thanks,
camgee

No Luck

I tried to update my Gateway LT2044u netbook with the new Acer AOD250 v1.27 BIOS (the Gateway's a clone of the Acer AOD250).

But, as the original poster said, our Gateway BIOS's are called KAV80 while the Acers are KAV60.

So flashit would not update the BIOS.

I wonder if I rename the KAV60.fd file to KAV80.fd, if it would work?

We only want to do this because the netbooks are not running as fast as they were designed to run.

KAV60 is the platform name, so is KAV80. Since they are different, you should not update the bios.
