880m is around 240m/330m. I guess NW games on a desktop?

I have it closer to the HD4650m.

But in professional apps it does beat all mentioned.

according to Notebook Check, it benchmarks between an ATI MR 4650 and an ATI MR 5650.

I haven't owned a desktop in years. The games I play work fine at lower settings but I usually have a second gaming machine/desktop replacement. Just like when I bought my T60p I also bought the Dell XPS M1710. I still use my T60p but the M1710 is long gone. I really need to update my Thinkpad and the W510 I think would be a great replacement since it comes with all the new bells and whistles. The only reason why I haven't bought yet is the touch-screen option has been removed from their site. They must have a heavy back-order.

The Precision M4500 seems to be the Dell equivalent but instead of a touch screen there is a RGBLED option. That hasn't been officially released yet.

BTW, congrats on your purchase.

Thanks NW but going to purchase when money in hand hope very soon. Question is the Seagate HDD what came stock on the G73?

And I am going to keep my 14" I know what you mean having different notebooks for different reasons.

Yes mine was a Seagate.

Did some copper modding today.

I looked at the photos but I am not familiar with the inside can you tell me what I am seeing that you changed? I have thoughts but why guess and be wrong when I can ask.

Also Justin said the CPU is a bit of a chore to get to? Not an issue for me. But is it easy or not to get to the 4th memory slot under keyboard in your opinion?

Take a look at the original post of this thread. I have some pics without the mod.

It's easier to get to the 4th slot than the CPU but you still have to remove everything but the system board to get to the slot. I leave it empty because of this. 6GB is more than enough for me. The CPU requires complete system board removal. That's why you see just my system board out of the case.

Looks to me like you have added substantial copper mass by adhering blocks of copper to heat pipes? Which was my guess but still not sure. Is that what I am seeing?
That's what you're seeing. He added additional copper fins to provide greater heat dissipation

Correct. I'm also replacing thermal pads but the initial ones I bought were too thick.

Is there any concern as to the effect on the phase change properties of the heat pipe? At the hot side vaporization absorbs heat then the vapor is drawn to the cold side where is condenses releasing heat. That is a very efficient transfer of heat. Drawing away from the source taking to a point for release and dissipation where fans help with active dissipation.

Adding blocks at points in the system (heat pipe) between phase changes to me seems not likely to be efficient? The blocks have no active dissipation so any heat they collect will passively dissipate into the area in the case?

Anyway I am not saying it won't work. I am not an expert on anything thermal just seems like rather than transferring heat that needs to be dissipated you are transferring heat that was already headed somewhere that is much more efficient because of the phase change. Transferring to less effective passive dissipation. There greater mass will delay the rise in temps but if not as efficient once saturated temps will actually rise not fall.

Heat pipe relies on hot end and cold end. If all you are doing is cooling the vapor before it gets to the designed cold end. You cause the phase change to happen prematurely prior to the ideal location where the greatest dissipation can happen (fans).

Give it a go and let us know the results.

I totally agree with you and testing will be needed. A lot of my tests are with forced air from the bottom so I will have to keep an eye on the affect for everyday use.

I forgot you had said in past you do serious cooling modifications for OC. I was stock in the stock with only those mods.

Keep updated. I know I will never mod or OC as much as you but does not mean I wont do a little and borrowing some of what you do that works is an easy way to try.

Good luck.

It's always fun to play with even if the experiment fails. I did my M17 similar to this and it worked out well.

Hey all, I've just been reading up on this thread...

Is anyone else here EXTREMELY turned off on this laptop because of the lack of RAID 0 support? 2 7200 drives in RAID 0 can get the same load times as a single SSD...and at a much cheaper cost. I guess for people running single SSD's it's alright, but I planned on useing twin 7200's until SSD's drop in price.

But I think because of this I'm looking into the W860CU...anyone else feel this way?

Nope, wouldn't use it even if it had it. My last few gaming systems did have raid capabilities but I never bothered with it. Laptops don't have a true raid card like you can get in desktops/servers. Because of this reliability would be a concern.
The ICH8M and ICH9M are both hardware RAID...in the past 2 HDD in a laptop was rare, in todays desktop replacements I thought it was near mandatory. The big Sager laptops have had RAID for years (granted thier a desktop based motherboards though).

Same with Alienware and Dell's older gaming system. Even the Thinkpad W700 and W510 offer it. Still wouldn't use it. lol

When you check on most websites the system is advertised with a firewire port. It doesn't have one. I'm holding the reseller responsible since when I called Asus they told me straight out different resellers order with different options or configurations. So I called brought it to the resellers attention and they are checking into what they can offer me component with software or any possible plug in that will give me the firewire option when I need it. It's really important that what is specified by the resellers as options that come with their version of the G73-JH-A1 comes as represented. I haven't had the chance to play any of the newer games on it yet but I really love this notebook. It's a very powerful piece of equipment more so the my desktop now that I thought was pretty good this G73 A1 version blows it away. It doesn't come with any users manual which I hate and there's none to download of their website either. I would think for the money spent whereas this is by far the best ever notebook for the bucks it should come with a users manual being it's also the most upgradable note with lot's of options to go up to 16 mgb of ram although the 4th dim slot is under the motherboard.
Anyone having received the A1 please keep in touch with me on your findings and was to optimize although the factory has done an exceptional job as is comes out of the box. MY Toshiba Qosimo is officially in repair now for over 3 months should I sue them? My warrantee is up in 2011 and they've held it not having the parts to repair for now over the 3 month period. It's obviously the main reason I bought this new G73 besides the fact I love high tech toys. Need opions on whether or not I should spent 1grand to sue Toshiba in small claims and try to get back my 2+ grand I paid for their system a year or so ago. I'm not sure if I should do it on principle alone or not. Need lot's of opinions being it had 3 major breakdowns within a 3 month period Jan. 18th and it's still there in their depot. Or since I have the G73 now, do I just eat Toshiba's horrific experience and never buy anything made by Toshiba??? BTW they have an absolute no replacement policy unless it's within the first week or so. Help!

I'd file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau about it. That way you put pressure on Toshiba to fix the issue and you don't have to pay to sue them.
